I know this has been talked about plenty of times on the forum and I have looked at some of the responses, but I want some updated advice please. Currently I have a VPS which include the following: Dedicated Ram: 768mb Burstable Ram: 2048mb Raid 10 Disk Space: 50gig Free backup Storage: 50gig Bandwith: 2000gig IP Address: 2 and all the extras like whm/cpanel, fantastico, Virtuozzo Power Panel. I have FFmeg and Red5 and full root access. The service is also great so far, anytime I have had a problem then take care of it right away. Here is the Problem: I need at least 120gig disk space and I am considering a Dedicated but I am far from a person that can operate a full server (no experience at all). Also, at this point I don't want to spend a ton of money on server as I have a lot of projects that are consuming my funds at this point. With my current provider I am paying $69 a month but used a promo and got 50% off so I paid for the entire year and saved a few hundred bucks. Can anyone recommend a place that you know of which has good service and can provide me with the space I need but without having to pay an arm & leg to get it. Thank you in advance for all your help P.S Incase you are wondering I am using hostv for my hosting and I have the VZ2 package.
do you have any set budget in your mind? as disk space on VPS is expensive. disk space is more expensive on a VPS when compared to a dedicated server because most VPS hosting companies use high end 15k SAS RAID 10 which is expensive than standard sata drives by about 6times. In the long run, it will probably be better to go with a low end dedicated solution. You can opt for fully managed dedicated servers if you don't have the required skills to manage server on your own.
You haven't mentioned anything about processor type, operating system or preferred physical location of the server.
Doesn't matter, he hasn't mentioned it. I assume you want to pay as little as possible, well the bad news is; You pay little - You get a shit service. Basically, a dedicated server with 120gb of space is going to cost at least $80 USD a week, without cpanel or management. Consider expressing your budget for a server and im sure you will get a better response overall.
First thank you everyone for your response so far. I don't really have a set budget but I can probably do $100 a month maybe even more if needed. Like I said I am very new to these things so about processor type and operating system you would have a better judge for I would assume a linux like everyone says and I need a good processor to run an image site, forum, and a membership site and a few other smaller projects. The location really doesn't matter as this is all legal so the US is fine. SSANZ, thanks for you post also, you are right I don't want something bad and like I said I can spend $100 or a bit more depending on the server. You also mentioned cpanel/whm which I am familiar with and would also like that on the server I get so it would be easier for me to work and I wouldn't have to learn something new.
At That budget point I would advise you to get a low end Dedicated server. search WebHostingTalk for offers, there are tons of offers. but select only well known providers and do read reviews before buying For some reason if you still need a VPS, The only VPS plan I know which gives you more than 100gigs of space is 4gb Plan from fsckvps. But its an unmanaged VPS without any control panel. Cpanel/WHM is extra $13.95, if you need Still I suggest you to go for Dedicated solution.
ok, other than the price range I specified what company and what price range should I be looking at for a dedicated. I guess if I have no choice but a dedicated I can probably free up some more of my budget to account for getting something like that.
as I said, First browse through offers at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=36 to get a idea of dedicated market. this would give you a fair idea of what all is available in market and at what price. and the final price depends on server you order. which would be according to your site requirements. i would suggest you to start with lower end servers first and upgrade as when needed
