Need a server

    hello,

I was thinking of hosting my ad network system based on Max Media Manger (www.openads.org) with layered tech. Now I'm gonna need some info on what server to buy. Please take into consideration that my budget is 200$/server/month at most. I would like the adserver to sustain about 2.5 million adviews per day, with peak times of 250.000 adviews per hour.

I thought of this one: https://order.layeredtech.com/ConfigureServer.lt?method=display&productId=890

    Would it hold ?

    Thanks,
    Pedro

Ok, I imagine space should not be an issue in this case so you could get away with 70gb or around that. So I'd recommend you get scsi disks rather than SATA drives.

But going to need some more information like do you need a control panel? What operating system and things like that.

IT can handle the load definitely. It wold be better if you'd go with SCSI since if in case, your server uses higher memory, it would swap some space temporarily.

SCSI is faster than SATA and SATA is faster than IDE.

    Its your choice, though.

If you can get a management company to manage the server, it would be great since they would handle all the technical issues with your server.

A few questions you should ask yourself ?

Do you want redundancy ? if so, go with a raid1 solution with an identical HD.

You should go for a 100mbps port.

Do you have all the technical and software skills ? If not, go for a manage solution.

Better go for 1000 mbit port or higher, the betters speeds with which your ads are displaying is good.

At peak hours, 100 mbit would make your server lagged in peak hours.

If you are pushing 100mbit via ad's I highly doubt just one server will be able to do it, especially in this budget range. 100mbit is fine for the odd burst 1000 is simply an overkill.

A dedicated server with shared 100 mbit cannot even push at 50 mbit. Dont even think of 100.

But a 1000 mbit line would allow that since it would make your site faster especially during peak hours.

You are not going to push over 100mbit on a server that is being used for serving ads. I don't know where you get your numbers from but a true not unmetered unguaranteed bandwidth you can push 100mbit no problem. The datacenter we use we've had no issue bursting our boxes to 80+ mbit and I've asked others using layeredtech and have had no issues either. If you have an ad server and need to be bursting past 100mbit you're going to need a much better server to begin with.

On top of that 1000mbit, 100mbit, 10mbit is going to make no difference in speed when you're only pushing 4mbit max.

I think it does in latency stuff :) contractual guaranteed latency is a must where availability hast to be a MUST.

The servers in Europe are cheap, but if you are serving ads here in the US, you might want to rethink that idea. There is a German company that starts with an H that had some really great deals. I can't remember the name for the life of me. It will bother me all day. If I think of it I will post them later. They offered unlimited transfer with a 100 mb connection. It was around 50 euros a month or something.

I know, components are very and extremely cheap in Germany, even cheaper than in USA. Is it giga-international or df.eu ?

www.hetzner.de is the company. Check them out. Be sure to look for the little British flag. It is in a very weird place. It is right in the middle of one of the squares in the middle of the page. They seem pretty rock solid. I don't think they have a giga-international link though. They give you unlimited bandwidth, but after a certain amount they shut you down to a 10mb link or something. From there, you can request that that open it up for you more. All this without additional charges.

The thing about Germany is they are very super strict when it comes to copyright laws. So I would be really cool with what I hosted there, that's for sure.
