Need a little help on keywords

Ok, I'm a liar. I need a lot of help on keywords.

I don't know where to begin on what to ask.

To me you just put them in your website and try to mention a few of them anywhere you advertise the site.

Obviously it's more complex than that. I've been really hurting to find what I'm doing wrong. Having a site for 3 months and not much happening. I have a feeling it's my keywords.

Seriously, I don't think I understand the concept.

Could someone please explain how this works?

There you go, over my head again.

AOL data set? I checked that site and now I'm more confused. Instead you should tell me about keywords here.

How about starting me off with....how do I choose them, where do I put them, what to be careful of?

There is a lot to keywords. Are you targeting a keyword that is already very competitive?

I probably am because I don't know the proper way to target something less popular and how to tell what's less popular.

Not only that but how many keywords to use, and what not?

    Try this:

    http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/

That tool will tell you how many people are searching for any given keyword (or combination of keywords). If you're just starting out, look for a keyword that is getting a few hundred searches (or less) a day. For example:

"Shoes" is searched for over 30,000 times a day (very competitive keyword)

"Womens Shoes" is seached for over 3,000 times a day (Still pretty competitive)

"Red Shoes" is searched for about 300 times a day. Try something in this range (or less) first, or else this webmaster/SEO thing is going to frustrate you verrrrryyyyy quickly :D.

So, step one: Pick an achievable keyword

    Ok, ok. This makes sense.

So, now once I have chosen this keyword, Obviously I add in in the meta tag, but how else can I optimize for this keyword?

Should I be using several keywords, or just a few?

Step 2: Add your keyword(s) to the meta (not so important), title tag (very important) and on page content (important). Use common sense with on page content and use the keyword enough, but not so much that it's obnoxious or considered "keyword stuffing".

Step 3: Get many inbound links pointing to your site with anchor text that includes your keyword(s).

Step 4: Wait a few months.

One free submission tools I have used to help me with keywords is www.quickregister.net Just register for a free account, and go to your control panel. Enter your website URL and one of the keywords related to your site. Click on the keyword generator tool. You'll have a list of 50 related keywords in just a few seconds. Your site is only 3 months old ? Does it have all your pages indexed on major search engines? Is your site well coded ? Does it have many pages (and are they all indexed) ?

Honestly, you can't expect much results on a website that is only 3 months old and you don't have done any seo work for it (this includes having inbound links to your site with your keywords on your anchor text).

Just be patient and wait for your pages to be indexed, and if you are targeting a niche of competitive keywords...then you would really want to invest some $ and time to get inside that "game".

That's true. 3 months is a short time. You need to continously work on your website and wait for the results.

Your site is 3months old. Wait for your site to have a better ranking. Create your content using your targeted keywords. Use your targeted keywords as anchor text.

hey what do you mean by this: and on page content (important). Do you make them invisable for seeing for users but still be there or do you mean as a page sescription seen by everyone? Beacose if it's like the second this leads to another problem, what if i have a website that doesent have description space but instead it's daily updated with various content?

Anywyas very informative post, rep added!

consider the density and prominence of those keywords.
