Hey man, I have had good experience with ASmallOrange. Their $50 VPS plan is what you need. Trust me because I used to run 4 forums on there. http://www.asmallorange.com/services/vps/

Their support is excellent. Nobody can beat them in support. Their datacenter is located in Atlanta, one of the best. Speed is great.

    Just sharing my experience.

But before anything you must research the suggestions posed here. You will regret if you don't. Consider all aspects from storage, bw, and SUPPORT! If you lack support and your server is down, what will you do?

It seems that your MySQL server is overloaded hence giving this problem:( as you are on shared server such errors is not a big issue.
    ERROR :
mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)
    /home/hiphopsi/public_html/forums/includes/class_core.php on line 271

Best option is to upgrade your hosting to VPS or Semidedicated and check if still face database problem. if you are in search of cheap and reliable host then i will suggest you for webhosting.uk.com. Their semidedicated plan is best for it's price ( $50/month )
You can try their service if you are not impressed you can charge back as they provide 30 day's moneyback guarantee also they are available 24/7 to serve you.

sorry to reopen this thread, but my site is also experiencing lag and down issues constantly, even after i upgraded to VPS. now my web host is telling me that i should upgrade further to a higher end VPS.
I think its insane for a 2 month old site to need that kind of server resources.

I'd recommend liquidweb. We manage to get two dual xeons with a load balancer and 8 GB of ram for around 800 per month.

6000 GB of bandwidth which is plenty.

    Here's the link

    http://www.liquidweb.com/?RID=Suckered

If you choose them I get part of a month free.. The support is amazing.
