Thesis allows you to make just about anything. There is a little understanding of how "hooks" work but once you get that down you are set. There is a nice open hook plugin that makes modifying themes pretty easyl If you want a nice pre built out of the box solution like a nice looking magazine theme you can visit Gabfire. Clean install nice backend and easy to update. I'm using Gabfire themes here: http://www.internetmarketingiq.com and http://themes.internetmarketingiq.com and on several other projects because they are so easy to maintain. Memhet said he was updating some of the other news/magazine themes in July of this year. Take a look.
