I have used textpattern and wordpress in the past and there are issues with each that make me want to try something new. I have a registered copy of symphony, but unfortunately, I don't know XSLT (they gave it to me for being one of the first 100). Expression Engine looks nice but costs too much to use commercially. Anyone have some suggestions, I want something that is pretty flexible (ala textpattern) and yet powerful (ala expression engine). Oh, and preferrable not very expensive.
Well, can you describe the issues you had with WordPress that make you want to try something else? Perhaps it is as simple as finding the right plug-ins to address your needs? Or some custom templates? If you are looking for a full-featured CMS, check out http://www.semiologic.com/ which adds to WordPress. Honestly, WordPress does most everything I need - if it doesn't, I program it myself.
I've heard good things about bBlog. I have yet to try it myself but it sounds like a promising alternative to Wordpress.
Wordpress seems to handle templating horribly. I love textpatterns use of simple tags and a complete seperation of php logic and the actual HTML which makes it much easier to work with, and even with kubrick on it I feel like I'm having to hack it too much. I will look into bBlog, isnt it based on the same code as wordpress?
I wouldn't have thought so. I don't think the folks behind Wordpress would be too keen on the idea of another blogging program using their code to power it.
I use Nucleus for two sites and I am pretty pleased with it. It is written in PHP. The system comes with a lot of plug ins to extend functionaility and it has some decent anti-spam measures, which you need, including an easily installed captcha plug in. Here is the URL: http://nucleuscms.org/
Wordpress. And I found it was very darn simple to change templates. There are tons of wordpress templates out there, just grab the one you want and add it. This is why I use wordpress (forget what I was using before): One day, the online newspaper that I read every day (okay, it is the Houston Chronicle, have to keep up with the home news) and they switched their entire site, inluding all the blogs, to wordpress. So I figured if they can do it, so can I.
by houston chronicle you don't mean chron.com do you??? the majority of the blogs at blogs.chron.com are running on moveable type... (I looked through 10 of them and didn't see any that were running on anything else, but I didn't look through all of them...) as to the chron.com site itself... I'm fairly certain that it's now running wp... what were you referencing?
Have not looked at what was powering them lately. Fools went and changed on me again!!! For some reason, chron.com sometimes does not come up. But houstonchronicle.com always comes up, though it goes to chron.com Now if only they would put in the comics section their sunday comics!
I thought that going with Wordpress was the best idea but after getting it installed found that the 5min install was the only easy part about it. First you get a basic panel to write your post that doesn't include any extra features like font size, images upload, text colour and the list goes on. Then you have to go around the net looking for plugins that never seem to do exactly what you want them to do. My only suggestion is, read every single option carefully before choosing. In some cases it's even better to spend a few bucks and have peace of mind but that is really up to every individual.
I took a look at the screen shots and it looks to be very complete. I’ll give it a go on my next blog. Thanks for the link.
I have to say that I officially regret ever installing wordpress. This morning I decided to try serendipity and it took about 2min to install. Very good blogging cms. If anyone wants to start a blog I think it’s in your best interest to try serendipity out. And WP all happy about there 5 min install……
