You could always setup a PHP/MySQL server and then install phpbb on it. Might not be the best forum software, but it should be able to handle your needs just fine.

It is not too hard, most forum software comes with good info on installing.

    SMF Forum Software
    PHPBB Forum Software

The PHPBB one is proberly easier for you but recives a ton of spam, I would proberly suggest the SMF one to be honest.

    There are many forum scripts
    phpbb
    smf
    mybb
    punbb
    ......
I would suggest you to use phpbb coz its easy to install and use.

Follow these 3 simple steps in order and you will get what you want:

    1. Get a list of available FREE forums (the most popular ones have already been posted here.
    2. Then search for Templates for each of those forum types.
    3. Once you have found a template you like then use the related forum.

Alot of people install a forum, then cant find a template they like for it and end up taking second best or removing the forum and instaling another.

Most forums have the same functionality, some abit more friendly than others.

In addition to that, you may want to also think about your long term goal of the forum and before choosing, see what MODs are available and how they would fit into your long term plans.

Moderating a forum is probably easier that actually setting it up. If you egt to the point where it becomes too big to moderate yourself, then you would either be in a position to sell it or pay someone to help you moderate it. You will find as the forum grows and you communicate with your regular users you will naturally find users that will want to help you on the site and moderate sections of the forum for you for FREE :) It is kinda the same way most chat rooms get their moderators (Even people like AOL (Ewww I cant believe i just said AOL!!!!(Argggg twice!!))).

    Good luck with your forum

Its actually pretty easy. All you need to do is install the forum software, which is easy no matter what software your are using. Then after the installaton you will need to upload a theme/skin that can be downloaded for free.

moderating would take good bit of time, since you are new you would have to learn a bit to proceed, though its not that difficult.

I agree - you can't really go wrong with SMF. My only criticism would be that the support forum on their site is not that great, but it is very simple to install & configure so you can't really go wrong

I would also recommend Simple Machines Forums (SMF). It is easy to moderate, install mods and to install custom themes.

Administration on a small forum is fairly easy, and as your forum gets larger, your admin skills will increase.
    Best of luck
