Does anyone out there have any advice on new members and necro posting? It seems like more often than not I get new (young) members who join my board and the dredge up threads that are over a year old. It gets pretty annoying. Does anyone have any tactics for dealing with this? Does anyone know of any mods that can mitigate this? thx,
You could try this one: Automatically Close Old Threads After X Days. On the other hand, I'm not sure that reviving old threads is necessarily a bad thing. To start with, I suspect that new members registering to respond to an old thread may be doing so because they were searching for something and came across that thread in the search results - older threads have a greater likelihood of being indexed. If that person arrives at the thread and finds it "locked", are they going to be more or less likely to register on your forum? And will that new member take the trouble to register to start a new thread, bearing in mind that a newcomer to your forum may feel a little more hesitant about posting in a brand new thread as opposed to replying to an existing thread?
Good points you mentioned. On another forum I saw that they just gave a warning that the thread is xx days old, and that perhaps it would be better to create a new one. But it's still possible to reply to it. But got no idea which mod it is though...
Great point Minstrel. I agree that the value is in the post itself and the new member. Does it really matter that a conversation was begun a year ago if new members are willing and wanting to pick up on it? I also have seen the mod Diether is speaking about (I think on TAZ) but not sure where that mod might be.
