I believe Google counts each subdomain separately, So getting the top 5 for 5 separate subdomains would not be that hard.

Well, you've hammered them in both places I've run into them. Sticks out like a sore thumb. Perhaps your claim is correct, I dunno anything about it - just calling it like I see it.

We all know that in fact the majority of firms that claim they do SEO wouldn't actually be able to do what's just been done :).

More importantly, this is a gimmick as noted. It does little for the client directly, but what it does do is makes a huge difference in gaining clients. I'm impressed, and I bet I could duplicate the process (but not the idea). They apply some of that ingenuity to their clients and you've got a good SEO campaign going on .

I sell some web services and products to a very narrow niche and I know just about every one of my clients and prospect would be very impressed if I showed them something like this.

Perhaps not, but the impressive part is that the list in the G SERP's is in perfect order from 1 to 5.

And for something completely different: 5 SEO excuses

Ya know, somehow I missed that for almost a year now... damn l337'ers. :D

Just curious, are the 2 places that stick out like a sore thumb here and the digg article this thread is linked to? And be careful using the word stalk, you might set yo-yo off again about Mia. :p

Someone should throw some weight on one of the sub domains to mess up their order.

I think you're missing the point. The point is not the difficulty of SEO. The point is to be able to show this to prospective clients who will be wowed by it. Any SEO company can show results. This is a whole different ball game - it's 'see, we made Google sit up and dance'.

Prospects will be wowed by it. I'm impressed with the marketing aspect of it, not the SEO aspect.

Though you'll note that they've received a ton of links as a result as well. So again, with the bright idea from a marketing perspective. I blogged about it and threw them a link from my pr6 directory. Others have done the same. So maybe they crawl up the rankings for some SEO terms - and those are difficult to rank for.

In short, it's not about ranking 5 subdomains in order. It's about having the idea to do it, the wow factor with clients, and the incidental linkbait they've created.

i beleive folks are trying to get this thread ranked for the term (and quite likely will succeed). I'm bet they have a second undisclosed serp they'll use with clients. In the meantime they're enjoying the linkbait as the SEO community ties itself in knots over this.

You dont pay attention to anything, do you?
The challenge wasnt ranking for a not-so-popular keyword.
The challenge was to rank them in right order..
5 subdomains in the particular order, and thats the game.

I was impressed by the marketing aspect too and I can imagine there is going to be some great links coming their way. They might even get lucky and have Matt Cutts blog about it but will he?

Mmm, you're not thinking of the old loophole, where the subdomains of de-sandboxed domains were automatically de-sandboxed themselves, and carried the same or similar weight as the main domain, are you? That one is over a year old.

nothing about sandboxing - just subdomains - they act as different sites on google.

I am clueless to the sandbox, I don't like to play in the sandbox, so I stay out.

Man it was a stunt, and now its quite popular.
With an active thread on DP, a link from Dig and lotta people talking about it, the keyword and that site is not not-so-popular anymore.
Cant you imagine the publicity and traffic that site is getting now. Thats what the client was after at all. So its been proved to be a very popular and successful SEO stunt.

    And yes that impressed me...

Belittling their SEO talents in this case doesn't mean they don't know SEO. And while some folks are proclaiming their technical proficiency, others are gaining all the clients with marketing - and keeping them with technical proficiency.

They pulled a one two punch here - wow clients AND get a bunch of high profile links to their SEO site, and you're sitting there telling everyone how stupid they are and how simplistic their methods are. The fact that they did so with what everyone here admits are fairly simple techniques just makes it more mind blowing.

Don't critique them. Look at what they've done and learn.
