Near Death Experience - people who have experienced death and lived to tell about it

    Hello All,

Today's topic is about the "Near Death Experience":

    Extract from wikipedia:

"A near-death experience (NDE), refers to a broad range of personal experiences associated with impending death, encompassing multiple possible sensations including detachment from the body; feelings of levitation; extreme fear; total serenity, security, or warmth; the experience of absolute dissolution; and the presence of a light, which some people interpret as a deity".

Tons of research have focused on this in the past years. How can a human being come back to life after their heart stopped? Hundreds of Thousands of people who have experienced documented their stories and are constantly contributing to scientific research.

    A summary of the experience:

    1) Time is irrelevant.
    2) Separation from the physical body.
    3) An enormous feeling of energy and awareness.
    4) Access to information that is inaccessible to the human mind.
    5) Emotions & Family attachments does not exist
    6) See a tunnel of light or darkness.
    7) Believe it or not, most of them interact and see Jesus (see the videos below).

    Extract:

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross defined the live stages of dying. In her autobiography, "The Wheel of Life", she marks the four stages of life after death based on her interviews with more than 20,000 patients:

Phase 1: Leave the physical body.

No matter the cause of death -- cancer, suicide or car crash -- people are aware of the scene they just left. They hear deathbed discussions or witness doctors' efforts to save them. They assume an ethereal existence. In this phase, they experience a wholeness. For instance, if they were blind, they can now see.

Phase 2: Meet angels or guides.

In this phase, people report they leave the body behind and enter a state defined as "spirit and energy." They are able to go anywhere with the speed of thought. The angels or guides comfort them lovingly and introduce them to previously deceased relatives and friends. It's a time of "cheerful reunion." Ktibler-Ross believes this is the phase most comforting to those who die a sudden death. Unlike those who die from lingering illness, where family and patient have time to prepare, those who die suddenly are as confused as their families. In this phase they are able to figure out what has happened. For example, "I am positive those who died aboard TVA Flight 800 were with their families at the memorial service on the beach" that took place soon after the crash, she says.

    Phase 3: Enter the tunnel.

Patients describe passing over some type of transitional structure -- a bridge, a mountain pass or a stream. There's a bright light at the end that radiates intense warmth, energy and unconditional love. People report feeling excitement, tranquility and the anticipation of going home. Some describe the light as God, Christ or Buddha, but all agree that seeing the light taught them there is only one explanation for the meaning of life, and that is love.

Phase 4: In the presence of a higher source.

Some call the presence God. Others report knowing every bit of knowledge, past present and future. The ethereal existence disappears and the entity becomes pure spiritual energy. In this state, people go through a life review, re-living every action, word and deed to see what they made of God's greatest gift: free will. They are asked, "What service have you rendered?" The goal is not to winnow the just from the unjust but to help souls understand the purpose of the lives they led. "It was the hardest question to answer," Kubler-Ross reports. "It demanded that people confront whether or not they made the highest choices in life. They found out whether or not they learned the lessons they were supposed to learn, the ultimate being unconditional love."

Hundreds of testimonials are on youtube to watch. As a Christian and someone who knows people directly that have experienced this, I totally believe what they're explaining and it is very accurate.

God allowed these people to experience and tell others but most of all, to provide a second chance and show that he is loving and caring.

    What do you think?

    God bless,

Probably just publicity freaks or dreamers. When you are spoon-fed such stories since the moment you said "Momma" then its not a big deal to dream about them when you are hit hard on your head.

There is nothing wrong with being spoon-fed the right information. Unsurprisingly, your response shows what kind of Mentality you have.
Publicity freaks, dreamers or even zombies for that matter, you need to do your research before speaking. Also, these are not 10 or 100 who experience this. Hundreds of thousands! Call them all freaks ?

Also, while you are at it, call this leading brain scientist a freak too.

I believe in near to death experiences, as I've had one. In fact, with the "summary of the experience" you've listed, I can relate to several of those. But, why this can happen is open to interpretation. It doesn't necessarily mean that there is a magic man in the sky. For instance, it could be physical changes that take place when your body is under severe stress.

True. Its not quite physical but rather mental. There is a very plausible natural explanation for this, namely that the brain is trying to relax the body and by thus increase its own changes of survival. This is nothing too exceptional or extraordinary. But certainly this issue is one of the creationists' favorite.

Your heart also stops between the heart beats. Your body cells and tissues can get along without new supply of oxygen for a while, provided that the oxygen will be back soon enough.

    LOL. That part I don't believe ;)

Great. At least, we would eliminate those who question the authenticity of this. I would love to hear more about your experience in details. Perhaps a new thread?

There is nothing too exceptional? Most of these people die in the operation room. When you're dead, your heart stops for whatever period designated AND your brain stops functioning. That means, this is not a mental effect or a dream. The experience comes from the soul. Coming back to life after zero-pulse is something that does not have an explanation.

For less than a second and that has its biological explanation because the cells are not completely deprived from oxygen. Try 15-30 minutes ?

Did you see the videos I posted? Look at the second video about the Atheist. I am sure you will know that his past is very similar to your way of thinking at the moment.
You can also see more. But I am not surprised you do not believe this.

That seems to be a plausible explanation. I don't really know the answers, but it does seem to be a leap for the religious to assume it's some type of absolute proof of a deity. I do believe that people experience near death experiences, and many of them have certain similarities, but beyond that, it's difficult to conclude the reason for them to occur. Like you suggested, it could be some type of hallucination created by the brain for survival in certain instances.

Luke, definitely do not start another thread on this, I actually feel a little embarrassed now. LOL.

    OK, Nate, here's my story...

In a nutshell, I was in the hospital, and had a dangerously high fever. They were trying to help me, but suddenly, I'm floating up above them all and could see them from above. Then, I just kept floating up, and actually went right up through the ceiling. At that point, I found myself in a beautiful field of lush green grass. After I spent some time in that lovely place, it was if I was pushed back in my body again. BTW, I didn't see anyone else at my get away vacation destination. When I returned, I actually complained to the hospital staff telling them I wanted to go back. I think they must have thought I was delirious. LOL. Maybe I was.

that is interesting. did you feel the "pure bliss" "love & peace" that is supposedly typical of NDEs?

were you scared before you went out of it? i would be; anytime i feel like im losing consciousness i freak out... i'd probly be the minority that gets the hellish experiences. glad you're alive :)

I don't think I would describe it as pure bliss, not sure about love either, it just seemed to be kind of a calm peaceful feeling.

It really wasn't scary at all. I didn't feel as though I was losing consciousness, but actually felt aware of everything.

Thanks for not thinking I'm too crazy...Ha Ha.

There is a medical explanation made by scientist regarding people who have near death experience.

"Some say they floated above their own body, others claim to have walked along a light-filled tunnel or to have been suffused with a sense of peace.

But rather than being a brush with the afterlife, near-death experiences may simply be caused by an electrical storm in the dying brain.

A study of the brains of critically ill men and women revealed a brief burst of activity moments before death.

Researcher Lakhmir Chawla, an intensive care doctor, said: 'We think that near-death experiences could be caused by a surge of electrical energy as the brain runs out of oxygen. "

    you can read moore here.

Pretty neat, you're the only person I know to have had one. And it def. doesn't make me think you're at all crazy. I've had my sanity tested through years of panic/anxiety so I'm probly one of the most understanding people you can find when it comes to abnormal mental experiences.

    Rebecca,

Something caught my attention in your description. The beautiful field of green grass. I know someone who experienced it before. She was a nun and almost an angel living on earth. What she saw however, were the close people she knew that passed away in her lifetime and went to this holy place. Each had a field of green grass around them. But the "amount" differed. When she asked her close friend nun about why there wasn't a lot of grass around her? She replied because she wasn't very generous to the poor. That place was was more like a gateway leading to heaven or a temporarily place.
On a side note, the "push" feeling you felt is actually the return of the soul back to the body. Your description of "pushed back" rather than freely return is accurate enough.
If it was really a hallucination or some sort of a brain effect, those thousands of patients would share similar scenes? The light, tunnel, the green field you described, river of pearl? Of course it is broad but the brain has nothing to do with it.

Btw, do you know how long you were unconscious for?

    Thanks, Nate.

I've never heard of Coast to Coast AM, but they sound fun. "A media phenomenon, Coast to Coast AM deals with UFO's, strange occurrences, life after death, and other unexplained (and often unexplicable) phenomena. Coast to Coast AM is overnight talk radio with daytime ratings." I bookmarked them. :)

It is fun! See what station it's on for you when you check'em out again: http://www.coasttocoastam.com/affiliates

I can't get anyone to listen to them and I explain it to everyone and some even attempt to listen but they either forget the station or are too tired to listen when it's on, so I'd probly marry you/attempt to (lmao), if you did start listening.

each show is different though, and lately they've been bringing on guests for overused/boring topics so you might tune in on a dud... just gotta give it a chance and have an open mind. basically if you're the kind that enjoys reflecting/talking about LIFE in general then you'll love it.

sorry for jacking the thread, i got hay to hit now

Here is my award winning formula for males experiencing near death : if you are oscillating between death and life and you feel that you are slipping into death , you are feeling getting separated from body and you are seeing tunnel of darkness or tunnel of light just hold your personal gun with two hand , death will go away and life will come back :D .

Rebecca - that is very interesting. The whole thing. I'm quite sure the nurses did think you were nuts though, lol :p

For me - I've had a few near death experiences; in hospitals, in a car crash, some other very unpleasant stuff not worth getting into.

The one that was most intense was when I cracked my head - and I mean really cracked it. I was in a physical confrontation, a guy I used to know threw me a good distance and onto the ground, and my head took the full force, in the form of one sharp corner of a heavy, metal toolbox.

It was weird, I didn't feel like I was leaving my body - I felt like everything around me was being into me - not like my body, but like how I suppose a soul MIGHT feel. It was like it all got sucked in and then there were flashes of things that had happened over the course of my life, then ti went dark and I blacked out.

I'll spare the details of what happened afterwards, obviously I'm fine - but it was more than just getting knocked out.

I felt weird, but it wasn't like draining - it was more like I was extremely powerful as it was/after it was all sucked into me.

    Just my little experience anyway. ^-^;
