NCAA puts ban on Indian mascots

    What is the NCAA thinking?!

I can't believe that in the year 2005 we could still be calling the native Americans ( the 1st Americans ) “hostile” or “abusive”.

perhaps we should change their mascots to the pretty ponys, that's sweet.

Lets hope FSU never makes a bowl game then :p Their mascot is permitted by the Seminole tribe and even has an indian warrior at the start of each game.

They are only banned during bowl games, if I remember right, guess political correctness only extends to nationally televised events. :p

Many Native Americans find these mascots offensive.

IMO- that's all that matters and I don't care what anyone else thinks about it.

And thats the sad part, that the NCAA can't step in to get rid of those that ARE insensitive to Native Americans to the point of mocking.

On its face if its a way to express courage and strength in the face of diversity, then Native American heros can make great representatives (like the example given). However most of those logos play on stereotypes furthered by the fans.

I could understand wanting to get rid on the "redskins" name as that's a derogatory term. However, I see nothing wrong with using a tribes name when given permission to do so. Infact, I understand that FSU gives money to the tribe.

I think they need to do something about that Syracuse orangeman as he is down right scary!

Ok, well that's one mascot/team. How many others are there?

You can't compare a racial slur to a mascot that means absolutely nothing, can you?

Oh and by the way, I am probably one of the least politically correct people around. It annoys me to no end though when people lump the treatmant and mocking of Native Americans in with the PC movement.

Gotta get rid of the fighting irish then, too right?

And those animals, poor things being cast as beligerant and fighting all the time with each other. I get a real negative impression every time I think of a badger or a marlin now that I see them playing games on the field. I don't know what a buckeye is, but I bet they are offended too. If my name were Bill, I'd be offended by the Buffalo Bills - making me think I'm never a winner cuz they can't win a superbowl - those bastards :(

The phrase "many are offended" - there is little evidence to support this at all. Maybe some people are, more likely some school officials - maybe school officials who pretend to be native american. If there really was any major offense to it, it'd be more than a peripheral issue.

If the mascot stumbles out drunk and sets off a petrol bomb then yes, I would be the first to rally against the use of that Mascot

You can't decimate a culture on a daily basis then use the fact that they don't have the numbers to force a change in attitude

This is not the stance the NCAA has taken, not from what I've read. If the NCAA was saying something like be mindful of the people you're portraying then that would be fine. However, they haven't done anything like that, they have simply said that American Indian nicknames are "hostile" and "offensive".

The knicknames are. They are based on racial stereotypes and slurs.

Seminoles is not a knickname, its a Tribe. There is a huge difference as long as the Tribe itself supports the use of its name.

I think that's the point. I can't think of a team that uses an indian mascot who makes it come off as a buffoon or anything. Maybe there is one, but I've always seen it done respectfully (what team wants their mascot to look stupid? - except the Phillies I guess). A blanket "that's offensive or hostile" just doesn't cut it for me.

In YSF1's example, if the Fighting Irish dude was a guy who came on the field at half time and started a fight (remember that family guy episode? LOL), then yank it - of course, but don't go pulling them all just for the sake of it.

I agree, perhaps we should try and get a list going of some knicknames that could be seen as offensive?:
    Washington Redskins
    Cin. Reds
    Southeastern Oklahoma Savages'

But then that question of hostile and offensive to whom arises?

    Wyoming Cowboys!
    UNLV Running Rebels?

Why do you even need to use Indians as Mascots?

And stop saying about Cowboys because thats getting old quick. Cowboy is a job description just like baker, blacksmith, etc. You can't compare them to Native Americans
