So I'm in a dilemma: English is not my native language, but I enjoy writing and really want to start a blog about stuff I'm interested in. Not just for the AdSense money, it's something I do on a daily basis. What you think? Shall I jump into it or my not so polished language skills would drive back my potential readers?
I'd go for it personally. As long as your content is interesting and unique and you market the blog well I can't see there being too many problems. If I was reading a blog that I had interest in, the odd grammar mistake wouldn't turn me away.
I don't think you should let that stop you, especially if it is something that you really enjoy. Your English doesn't appear to be horrible in your posts. The more you write, chances are that you'll get better as well. Best of luck!
read a few books on effective headlines and ad copy it can help. You may have an advantage by using the most simplistic apprach which gets results on the internet
Your English doesn't look that bad - no reason not to go for it. In a worst case scenario (as in if readers ever complain), you can always get someone to proofread for you later.
As long as you love writing and are generally trying to improve your skills, it doesn't matter much. Many people can understand [May not necessarily like ] even those people who use very poor english. If the content is very good, readers may forgive your mistakes. Just ask shoemoney.
vasago, you have a valid point about potentially putting people off with poor English but that certainly doesn't apply to you; your command of the language is better than many for whom English *is* their native tongue, so go ahead, you'll do well And that's coming from a naturalised Englishman
Thank you all for the great encouraging words! Feel much more confident now. DigitalPoint seems to be a community full of wonderful people. See you around!
Yes, you must do it with confidence. Don't worry too much about that. Just write and write... you 'll improve your english soon. Act first.
There you have it - if probably the best writer around has approved of your writing, you have no reason from keeping off writing! As such, you might like a lot of other things - do you always keep yourself from doing them? NO! So why should you this time? Regards, Jeewant
Well that's good. At least you won't be disappointed when it's pennies. I think you should do what your heart tells you to do rather than seeking approval from others. It's your blog about stuff you care about and for yourself. Who really cares what anyone else thinks? You already said you really want to do it. Would me telling you it's a bad idea really matter? I hope not.
Usually, I'm a terror for picking up on people's poor English. Heck, I even correct my boss's reports at work - which she tolerates, I guess, because they are technical documents for a picky but non-technical audience, and have to be completely unambiguous. But, and this is a big but, the one exception I would always make would be for interesting content, written by someone who is obviously enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their subject, where I knew that English wasn't their first language. I would dread to think what the results would be if I had to inflict the remains of my schoolboy French on the rest of the internet. So, I would say, go for it! Make the language issue clear on your "About" page, and that you welcome (friendly!) corrections by e-mail. If your content is compelling enough, you'll have dozens of willing proof-readers. And your English will probably improve by leaps and bounds just with practice. I agree with marketjunction that you'll probably earn pennies out of this - but maybe enough to cover the hosting costs? Just going to spell-check this before posting, in case I fall foul of Muphry's Law...
it would do no harm to give it a shot, you have good enough english to post here, so it should be good enough to communicate your message in a blog.
I have to say that when reading blogs online there are many sites that are written by non-native English speakers. There is one blog I subscribe to which has quite poor English, but the ideas are all there and they are really interesting ideas. It doesn't put me off reading the blog - what really puts me off is if it just doesn't make sense at all which probably isn't the case here.
