Naming Pages & Keywords

    Hi

What is the latest wisdom on targeting keywords by using keywords in the page name?

    For example:
if I wanted to target "blackberry server setup" I would use "blackberry-setup.html" or blackberry-server-setup.html.

What if you were to use longer page names based on 4 or 5 keywords?
Is there a suggested maximum number of keywords you should not go beyond? What would be the disadvantages of this?

    Thanks

As far as I know you are only limited by the length of filename that your server supports. It generally is a good idea to keep urls fairly short though. This looks cleaner and more professional to your visitors. It also ensures that people can see your entire url in search engine results. Sometimes people want to write a url down on paper too.

I think blackberry-server-setup.html is better than blackberry-setup.html, but once you get over 4 or 5 words it becomes questionable whether you should use all of those words in the filename. As a rule of thumb, if it looks awkwardly long you should try to shorten it.

If you include too many keywords in your urls, it looks spammy and it dillutes the strength of the other keywords in your url.

If in doubt, check what the competition does to target such phrases.

Google definitely gives you a boost for including the keyword phrase in your file name, including folder names. In your case I would label the file: "blackberry-server-setup.html". The closer the name is to the keyword phrase you're trying to rank for, the better. And as Vansterdam said, try to keep it a reasonable length (which in this case it is).

blackberry-server-setup.html is better than the former, dont use 4-5 keywords for the page names,it will be confusing and will not be that effective.
