Nameservers and Hostname

I am still pretty new to running my own VPS and I have a silly question. I have a domain that I am NOT going to renew (for instance 1234domain.com). When I first setup my VPS, I bought it for the sole purpose of running that domain, so not knowing any better, I created my hostname as vps.1234domain.com and my nameservers as ns1.1234domain.com and ns2.1234domain.com. Now, will I have to change those once I DON'T own the domain anymore, or does it matter what those are called? Even if it doesn't matter, should I change them to something more generic, that's not associated with a domain, in case this happens again in the future? Also, that domain is the primary account on my cPanel, is there a way to change that to another domain that I'm going to keep because I tried deleting it and it made some portions of my other websites go down?? Any assistance will be much appreciated!

Your server does need a hostname and a nameserver. You could always just get, like you said, a generic domain since they are cheap. I would then tie all other domains to that. There are quite a few ways to do it.

Thank you for your response. So, to answer my question fully, I DO have to use a valid domain name that I own as the hostname and nameserver??? If I really want to get rid of the domain that it's currently set to, can you recommend some other ways of doing it? I have another domain that I could change it to, but I'm worried how intensive/involved that will be and how much downtime that would cause??? Any other assistance would be appreciated....
