Well, back when I created my first directory, I was really surprised by the number of spammers on the web. They are everywhere and, in some cases, they are really smart.

Ha, I am surprised at the spammers as well. I had spammers before I even started to promote my directory, so have no clue how they found my site. It was this Monday, (I started doing a little link building on tuesday), anyhow this monday, I see spam on my directory which really shocked me. How did they find me!?!

Not really surprised by the results of my directory, it's a business plan and a lot of hard work ;)

    ---

I'm surprised why so many people think they can operate a web directory, but are in just for the quick buck and not try to build a quality internet guide.

I was surprised by how much work it was. Don't get me wrong, but I thought it would be categorization work like moving listings to the correct category or deciding how best to split categories into sufficient sub categories. Instead its work making sure that each directory is still unique, weeding out spammers, or making sure pages are being indexed.

The amount of spam from MFA sites is huge and surprising.

I didn't expect many people to actually read the detailed submission guidelines. But I was shocked at the number of submissions with complete disregard for of submission etiquette, the worst being filling in the title with high value generic keywords. Over 90% of submissions to one directory contain misleading titles. Most of these are not spammers, but seem to have real sites. It's almost as if they enjoy the act of submitting more than they care about actually being accepted.

I'm surprised by the idiots that try to sneak in extra HTML links (which aren't even SEO worthwhile) in the description considering the purpose of the directory is to link to the nitwits in the first place.

Why try to scam an ugly looking extra link?

I'm also surprised how many of the same site some people have! I've seen the same damned thing about 15 times, on different domains, crappy each time, and I just simply click "delete" or "ban" when I see it. If offers next to no value to my visitors... so goodbye.

i think usually from search engine to find keywords that generally used by free directory submission like "powered by phpld" "submit link" "powered by esyndicat" and much more. :D

Very true. I almost recieve around 2 out 10 website submission as spams. Even worse, MFA sites. I got to know people who have around 50 domains with MFA sites listed which look ordinary at first but on having a closer look are generally MFA with no whatsoever useful content.

    Regards,

    Admans.

The thing that surprised me most was the drive that it gave me to want to learn php, smarty, phpld and mysql to better it. It made me think of some great/crazy MODs to try and accomplish the task while in the whole process.

We do very well without adsense, but there again hard work was always far more rewarding than adsense ever was, or ever will be

Free for reciprocal links! This was the biggest mistake that I made in one of my directories. Each time I check my reciprocal link I find that it is in a ugly non-indexed page with HANDREDS of other links. So at the end I decided to change my pricing categories.

I am continually amazed at how many people do not bother to read the submission guidelines and/or follow even the simplest directions. I offer a free service and at the very least I would think someone would spend a moment or two to get things correct (don't put your email address in the title, etc.). One directory I have gets around 100-200 submissions a day and only about 20-30 percent are correct....That makes for a lot of work trying to correct them (if I have the energy)....:)

    What surprises me?

The number of idiots who ignore the big "submit listing" button on every page of the directory and then email me using the email address hidden away at the bottom of the site credit page to ask if we'll link to them...

Oh, that and the number of people who have broken caps-lock keys.

I am surpised on how many quality links we have been getting, and also the ability to enhance our customers look'n feel for the website. I really am impressed with the outcome of the directory that OptikPoint has been turned into, and it deffinently is a great experience when you have really happy customers.

It's worth every minute of the work put into it.

I am not surprized about nothing from my directory. I had a plan to do something and it work, although you can get rather alot of spamming so it is best to use some sort of script to try and stop thoughs bots.

At one point I was getting something like 1000 submissions a day where a large marjority of them were coming from an auto submission script or something.

It would have not worried me to much if they had linked back to my site and also were not foreign listings.

I had a lot of listings that were in other languages when my site is English.
