Name 10 things that are most important for a site to rank high in google

I'm bookmarking this thread and I'm going to make a "to do" list according to what you all said. I'm finding running my business leaves little time to market it.

I'm going with quality content and good keyword research, then, if you've got something unique to say or you are good at the service you are offering, or your products are unique enough, then backlinks come eaily with less effort. That's why I'm putting so much time into running my business...I believe the more quality I offer the more natural, easy, links I will get. And these kinds of links are like repeat customers...they come to you.

 

All valid points - A couple of months back I got a backlink from a site which had a PR 6, the page was filled with the targeted keyword and my site zoomed to 2 or 3 from nowhere. The backlink is no longer there and guess what...neither is my first page position on Google.

I can honestly say that a link from a high ranking page with related content will be worth much much more than 50 poor quality backlinks.

But we all know that finding free quality backlinks is extremely difficult and time consuming, so if you want to get to the top, and you have a budget consider renting link space from a related website with high PR.

I think luck is a more important factor than people realize. Why some good sites are singled out for good rankings and others are not is truly a baffling occurence.

 

Thanks for you comment, Bubbles. What a great example of how important backlinks are. Here's another one. And this one is really quite funny, no matter what your political opinions are. I'm actually republican and I even think it's funny.

You all may already know this but I just heard about it so I've got to tell.
If you type in "miserable failure" in Google, you get the white house website at #1. The page is the bio for Bush.

Here's the lesson...
No where on the page does it say "miserable failure". But apparently Google thinks he is a miserable failure because they have found enough other sites that link to the bio page with the words "miserable failure".

1.) Good Content because Content is king.
2.) Age of site
3.) High PR or High traffic backlinks
