That's the point. They are saying the reason nobody is pressing for his impeachment is because doing so would cause him to invade Iran quickly, Declare martial law and cancel the 08 election.

If this is true (the way the Democrats are fearful to think about impeachment), it means we're lost. It doesn't even matter if GWB would do it or not, it's that the politicians have given so much power to the President, they are now terrified to act against him.

The real reason he won't be impeached is because most of them agree with him.

Impeachment is a dastardly big step. In impeaching Clinton, the Republicans misused it for political purposes.

Impeaching Bush would mean elevating Cheney to the top post.

Hard evidence of abuse of power sits behind so many documents that the WhiteHouse isn't providing for anyone at any time.

I'd move on to other topics.

There is nothing to impeach him on, you may not like the Patriotic Act, but it was voted on by congress. You may not like the war in Iraq but he was given approval by congress to wage a war. If you impeach Bush you have to impeach everyone who voted for the things that you now using to impeach him against.

Impeachment is a process the Founders mention 6 times in the Constitution. It's meant to call to the carpet, a leader who has performed questionably, and have him answer for that.

When Americans start thinking that impeachment is extreme or a detriment to the system, we're basically rolling over and saying, "Ok, you're a badass, but we'll try to get you next election cycle."

If you're looking for an impeachable offense, torture based on the new torture memos is a clear cut case. All they have to do is provide the memos to clear themselves. And if they are going against the law, why the heck do we still want them in power?

    It baffles my mind...

The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Its not for someone who has "behaved questionably"

Thou who pretend to uphold the constitution should know the text, at least.

Irony: seeking the impeachment for someone who "appears" to have done something wrong while complaining about the government stripping your rights making it possible to arrest you for "appearing" to be a terrorist.

And who is this Nader anyway? Is he someone important that we should care about?

There's a point there somewhere. No president fails to consult their lawyers before doing something major. They're called advisors and they're very important to make sure the desires of the president are in line with the laws of the land. CEOs and other business people do the same thing. It doesn't matter if there's a handy dandy policies manual, you still talk to advisors before making decisions that could result in major consequences, good or bad. The lawyers are there to make sure you are interpreting the laws and policies correctly.

There's a reason that ever since the consitution was written, what it says has been under intense debate.

The New York Times published an article about a memo approved by the White House which outlined what CIA integrators can do. Some of the items on the list are

    Withhold food,
Hitting a terrorist with an open hand to the back of the head
    Temperature changes
    Playing loud rock music

and probably the most extreme is water boarding but even that is not that extreme as we use water boarding to train air pilots in the military.

you can consider me a... freshie, what i say is basicly what i think, since i dunno the politics around this.

Withhold food, same as doing it with water, plain wrong it's a key "stone" to survive.
the hitting with a open hand, can't really imagine the "badness" in that, if it's not abused.
Temperature changes, that's pure evil (i hate being to warm)
Playing loud rock music, uhmmmm is it very loud? and like 24h a day seven days a week? then it might be annoying.

The water thing i think i actually heard about, it activates your drowning reflexes? that gotta be the worst one iv'e heard about in this thread atleast..

    Wiitieas little unbiased list..
