Thanks for the great post! I learned something new today. There is also a rumor that crosslinking websites on the same IP would incurr a similar penalty. am I correct in assuming that this COULD NOT be the case if Google does not penlize basd on IP?
I think any linking practices done to excess will be at the very least discounted. It seems to me that Shoemoney posted about having that problem several months ago here at DP. Bottom line: Don't overdo it.
Does that mean "my two sites on same server and one linking to other" is OK (and is same as any other site linking to mine)?
My reading of that is that under normal linking situations two sites, one sitting on a unique the other on a shared IP, will be treated similarly in terms of how their PR is determined. But reading between the lines there is no implicit mention of how 2 or more sites sharing one IP will be treated in terms of PR when they interlink. I also note that there is no reference to whether multiple backlinks from sites sharing an IP are treated in the same fashion as multiple backlinks from sites on uniques. I am reading this incorrectly?
That's what I've read also. I have yet to come across a definitive statement regarding crosslinking between sites on the same shared IP.
this begs the question, what if your ISP did not configure virtual hosting correctly and what is google's definition of correctly? i have unlimited domains on a hosting company and was curious about this exact question since i'm thinking of posting several niche related sites but hope i'm not killing myself with page ranking since they'll have the same DNS name servers.
