Myspace links > now redirects!

    Hi all,

Adding a few comments to friends-profiles on myspace just now, I noticed that the links were turned into redirect links (via: http://www.msplinks.com/ ). This means that the links will count less for SEO purposes.

Ouch that means Myspace is cracking down on people trying to advertise their Myspace site. That's bad news for Myspace site owners indeed... What's next? That's bad news for me because I run a myspace site, but I guess I'll have to rely on something else instead of comments to promote my site.

Is it just comment links or outbound links in profiles too?

I agree, but this link masking won't do much...

First, the links still work, so the sites are still getting traffic from click-throughs. Second, and more important, a lot of the spam comments these days don't even use live hyperlinks. So these new redirects don't even combat that.

(I was just researching this and blogged about it this morning. Will the spam stop??)

I think it is a pre cursor to future actions. This msplinks system can easily be used with a blacklist system.

For example, say MySpace targets "Joe's Robot Friend Adder" and takes legal action (fyi they are shutting a lot of these sites/programs down.) One of the outcomes of these type of actions is that the claimant (myspace) is provided the source code and the IP list of all customers. This is a quick way to blacklist regular abusers.

This is what Blizzard does with Warcraft bots.

If you as me, the easiest thing MySpace can do is drop in a captcha like they do for friend requests.

Looks like they are screwing with the profile updating now too. CAPTCHA after updating which should prevent the viral scripts from infecting everyone. I've also noticed that they are screwing with image urls which is breaking some of my layouts....**annoyed**

I always hated myspace, and never got into it until a friend of mine made one for my website. Then I got like 600 friends somehow, and just redirected the page to my website. Now they don't allow redirects anymore. heh. I'm just going to put a picture of the hottest girl alive on there, and bet you I will get tons of visits :D.

MySpace's biggest problem with this last wave of spammers was that they were mostly phished accounts. The CAPTCHA is the biggest weapon they have. It's about time they start doing more with it.

Yeah the links you put in your own profile will work fine, so you will just have to focus on building a friends list. Leave a few interesting comments to a few high page rank friends per day and it will increase your profile page rank (this is a lot more work though).
