MyLastname.com controversy..

Discussion in 'General Business' started by schlottke, Sep 4, 2004.

I emailed a guy who registered my last name schlottke.com in regards to purchasing it. Requesting a price he would like to charge for it. The guy respionds back with $500.00. I'm not going to pay $500 for a name no person outside my family can even spell, obviously, but is there any way I can do to force him to lower the price or hand it over? I know Im not Madonna, but this guy is obviously squatting..

This one will be tough. I know of a battle currently taking place where the 'owner' said $5000 and they are obviously still fighting over it. Has been 3 years....

I don't really care much about it, but it was pretty pathetic to try and charge 500 for a domain he will never use.. lol.

I know of a company that buys up last names URLs and sells personalized e-mail addresses. I do not think there are many dot com or dot net surnames out there to be bought at this time. I could be wrong. For US genealogists surname.us is a great URL for genealogy site. Sorry I did not think of this when I first heard of dot US URLs.

How do you know exactly he would never use it for something?

{shrug} Well it's not like he is actively trying to sell it. I didn't see a "for sale" sign on the site when you go to it, and I'm assuming you contacted him, not the other way around. I know people who have sold domains for $30,000 (because someone wanted it, not because they were actually trying to sell it). I've also been offered (unsolicited) up to $15k for a domain I own, and I didn't sell it.

    Shawn,

I totally agree with your point- but the difference is that yours and the other domains had some relavence towards *something*. I could see your last name selling for more than a domain's face value, but not mine.

At any rate- Im not upset really, just thought it was odd that he valued it so highly..

Well a domain is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it (or in this case, more than what someone is not willing to sell it for). :)

No, you can't FORCE him to lower the price. Frankly, $500 is fairly resonable for reselling a desirable domain name. My company just purchased a great domain name for $1500.

tell you him you aren't interested and that you cannot afford to pay that much - thanks anyway, buddy.

I doubt you'd pay the five hundred dollars anyway, just see if he contacts you again. It's not like he's going to get money out of anyone else.
