Most blogs have the no follow applied, so the links won't help you with Google.

Actually that is an excellent idea. I have done this myself and most blog owners are glad to get your post if you write a good one that is relevant for their particular theme.

As a PR6 blog owner, I don't think it's a clever trick. I get lots of such comments ~ where a keyword is used as name. It's clearly spam & I never approve them. A lot of bloggers install Akismet which effective filters out junk comments promoting viagra, rolex, etc. So a lot of times bloggers, thankfully, don't even get to see these comments.

The other "trick" comments are the usual: "your blog is interesting but I did not understand some parts of it" and its variations. For goodness sake, at least be a little creative.;)

It's OK not to use your real name (But not "widget man" :D)
Relevant comments that, at least, seem to come from a real person not a spam machine will stand a higher chance of getting approved.

When I get a comment on one of my blogs I judge it based upon what the person has written first. If it is actually relevant and sincere I will approve it. I dont mind what they put as their name as long as it isnt a string of random keywords.

If you had a blog that was about cars and someone posted a comment that was relevant to the post and they put their name as Corvette Lover or Corvette Fanatic along with a link to their corvette site - wouldnt you think that was OK?

This is just an example, I do not have a car blog nor do I post comments on them.

i though that "trick" was obvious. Pretty pointless as most blogs use nofollow.

Well as a blogger I can tell you:
In such a case I happily will take your comment - and edit your url manually out.
Simple as that. Bloggers are not stupid, especially not the high profile ones.

I have several entries on my blog which are hunted by a certain industry and we do play a game. They leave the link to them, I edit them out. Now, after over 90 comments and nearly two years, some of them got smarter and write "if you like to find a good provider for, search for name x on google". It is creative so I leave it in there for the moment. :)

I like Jon's suggestion, that is okay from my point of view - plus event though it is an adsense site, it is actually something worth linking back to. Make it worth the link, and your entry will most likely stay alive.

I don't know for some reason I was never comfortable doing this...
It just seemed like I am trying to take advantage of someone else's blog.. not saying that it has to be seen that way, but just how I felt about it...

By the way if you want to leave backlinks by comments on blogs, you should check links whether they have got no follow tag or not.To check this, try firefox backlink extension which highlights no follow tags.

This tip may work, if the moderator only looks at the content in comments.

*Some people create comment policies to tackle this "problem" anyway.
*This tip is not effective on most blogs, but most effective on blogs with "nofollow" removed.

I think a big part of this is whether or not your website is relevant to the blog. For example if you post a comment on a blog which is about sports cars and you add a link to a real estate or credit card site your comment is unlikely to be approved as is.

My thoughts about the no follow tag - If the blog receives a lot of traffic you are likely to get visitors to your site (if it is relevant) by posting a comment with your link. Personally, I dont mind the no follow tag if I will be getting a potential increase in traffic.

Some blog owners may not like the use of "nicknames" ie keywords in place of your name, but many of them will not mind it (I know that I would not have an objection to the practice as long as the commentor doesnt put in a string of nonsensical keywords.

Many blogs will have contact information somewhere. If you really liek the blog and it is relevant to your own sites then it would be worth your time to try to contact the webmaster to ask their thoughts.

is commenting on blogs really worth the time investment? couldn't that time be spent more productively? especially with most being nofollow

That decision would be up to each individual. My blog does not use the no follow and there are many others who are the same way.

Your only intent in posting a comment on a blog should not be just for the PR value - think traffic

Well if you are a fellow blogger or even have a website that is relevant to the blog in question (where your are making your comment post), than absolutely, commenting on blogs is well worth the time and effort.. It is one of the staples or part of the life blood of how the blogosphere stays proactive..

And as kentuckyslone has mentioned, having a link on a site, especially if it is a site relevant to yours, is a good thing! Even if that site has nofollow on..

It can still bring you traffic and it also gives you a link in other SE's like, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, etc..

Many, many blogs including one of mine turn off the nofollow rule and just monitor comments more closely.. So, if you ask me... Yes! Commenting on blogs is well worth it..
