My site reached at no. 2 for my keywords, Now what?

After hard work and efforts of One year my site reached at no. 2 position 20 days back on Google's first page. After 10 days again slipped to No. 5, and yesterday again it reached to no. 2.

    I have following queries:

    1. Will it slip repeatedly before settling at its final position?
    2. Site at No. 1 in my competition is 3 years elder than my site and have two time more content than my site. I have 500 pages and they have 1500 pages. What should be my strategy to beat the no. 1 site?
    3. How difficult it will be to beat the No. 1 as I feel that I have more quality links than Site No. 1?

    1. Well.. it could slip, but it really depends on the keyword.
    2. What should be the strategy... well, download SEO spyglass and find out his backlinking strategy. This way you will know how to surpass him

just continuing quality link building as it is a continuous process. Many times it get confusing and hopeless at this stage but don't give up the good work.

    1. Some initial oscillation is normal. It will not slip if your competition does not build links. So continue building links, or they'll overtake you. You may have #3 and #4 very close on your tail. Don't let them catch up.

    2. The advice from Andyee to use SEO Spyglass is good. Follow it. Check their most powerful links and duplicate them. Don't bother with the low-value ones. Increase the number of pages, but don't be obsessed with it - your competitor may have a lot of pages that bring no added value or juice to his site. Ensure your pages have great content, do NOT create many pages with shallow content (specially after Panda!).

    3. Continue building quality links. If your links are in general of higher quality than those of your competitor, you will eventually overtake him, even if he has a much more links.

    1. Your position can vary. But after some time it will at a same position for a longer time
    2. You may able to beat him with more links. But remember traffic generating from unique contents is more natural. You should build more contents
    3. Just get more quality links. You will reach the top.

continue with your backlink campaign. Its an ongoing process, if you stop and your competitors continue then you will lose out in the rankings.

Just continue to submit unique quality content and make sure that you build backlinks faster than your competitor. Therefore, you will be no.1. It is just a matter of time and nobody knows how long will it take.
