You must have over optimized your site. This has an adverse effect. Do less but quality work.

The only way to do well on Google serps these days is to work with Google (i.e., give it what it wants). You Have to use top quality content - there's no getting around it. Too many people on here are using non-english speaking copywriters or writing their own content and expecting big results. Link farms don't work (not really), comments can help but shouldn't be used as a main strategy, and, while forums can help boost ranking if you can establish it as an "authority", who knows how Google determines which sites are "authorities"? You have to fill the website with top notch content (keyword optimized, of course), post articles to web 2.0 properties, and submit content on popular blogs as guest posts. I know it can be expensive but that's just the way it is. If you rely on crap content, your serp positions are never going to be stable. I use MariseMedia for my content (mainly seo articles but I've used their blog maintenance service in the past) and they're pretty good. Their prices are incredible - I maintain 7 different sites and needed a lot of content and they gave me a bulk discount of $5 per 400 word article. Incredible! Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that on-page SEO isn't the only thing you have to tackle when you're trying to rank on the first page for keywords. Basically, you have to make your site really user-friendly, keyword optimize without keyword stuffing, and use good content.

What do you mean exactly? Do you mean it's not ranking for keywords that it used to or it has been de-indexed? Did you use Black Hat techniques? Blog networks or other paid links? Did you get a message in Google's Webmaster Tools? Are you over-optimising on-site? Do you have a high keyword density (more than 2%)? These are all things to think about.
