My site is listed in google's directory but not DMOZ

Discussion in 'ODP / DMOZ' started by HealingTone, May 8, 2009.

Three or four months ago I submitted my site to dmoz. I found out yesterday my site is listed in google's directory. When I searched for my site in dmoz nothing came up. Anybody got any ideas why this is? I thought you had to be accepted to dmoz before you could get into google's directory.

Are you sure it is listed on http://directory.google.com/ ? Or perhaps you mean it is showing up in Google searches. The two things are different, and as far as I know, http://directory.google.com/ takes its data from DMOZ, but I could be wrong, because although I know a lot about how DMOZ works, I understand nowhere near as much about Google.
    Does anyone? :p

Yes I am sure, if you click on the link it shows my site google directory link. google does take its data from dmoz. It is impossible to submit to google's directory unless you submit to dmoz first as far as I am aware.

Thats not a Google directory listing (notice it dosen't link to a category). Its not in DMOZ and its NOT in the Google directory. Google just returns it in the directory search results as you were obviously searching for that site specifically.

There was a SEO tool that actually showed my site as listed in the google directory. That is how I find out that I was in the google directory in the first place. I didn't bookmark the site but I'll try and find it.

IMHO, it's not easy to get listed in DMOZ. You need to wait for approval from the volunteer Editors. It can take months...

What has that got to do with the issue raised by the OP in this thread?

It's quite hard to get listed in DMOZ and they say that it can take up to 6 months for your website to get submitted? Not sure but I think you should be patient and wait. I've been waiting for 4 months :(

Right, check this out. This forum http://forum.axishistory.com/ DOES link to a category in google's directory but in Dmoz the forum is nowhere to be found.

Not sure if it's the case with you, but I've seen sites listed that used to be listed in DMOZ but got removed for whatever reason (usually because the domain expired) but the listing still remained in Google Directory. The two are not intrinsically linked, even though Google directory gets listings from DMOZ - though I think the GD listing may eventually disappear if it doesn't appear/reappear in DMOZ.

I thought the Google directory was dead, and is now nothing more than a DMOZ landing page ?

Google Directory is just one of many long-term users of ODP data, but Google has always followed its own schedule for refreshing its data, and often runs way behind the current DMOZ material.

I think that the original author is mistaken as he just searched for his site on google and as far as dmoz is concerned it is almost impossible to go their unless you have a pretty intresting site
