Hello all, My website is based on Super Mario, and the main keyphrase I target is "mario bros". In late 2010 we were 3rd on googles first page for this keyphrase. I slowed my updates (although not completely dead, I was still doing press updates from Nintendo) til a couple of months back. But its come to my attention that my site is now not even in the first 10 pages for this keyphrase. Whereas on Yahoo its still at the top of page 2 at least, and climbing back up quite quickly. Can anyone tell me if there is anything obvious that is making google not like www.themariobros.net for the search term "mario bros" - I have checked using search:themariobros.net to see if my pages are still indexed - and they are - they are just so low ranked I cant even find them! My first thought is that this is potentially because of the low volume of updates / lack of any MAJOR updates to the website - but I've been back updating it now for 2-3 months and still no movement. Not even to the first 10 pages, let alone back to where it was. Any ideas? this is a "proper" site with what I would hope to be genuinely reasonable content. Not a 5 minute knock up designed to make money so I dont understand why the site would be getting penalised so badly? I'm a little out of date with SEO etc and changes to google so any advice greatly appreciated. Best regards Luke
its not just lack of updates on the site itself, its probably lack of link building activity along with lack of social media presence that dropped your ranking. if you are not building backlinks to the site and sending social signals from popular social media sites, that would explain why you lost the ranking.
SEO has changed very fast since the last 12 months. Now you have to make fresh plans consisting of onsite SEO, off site SEO, & social media optimisation . Hope you can gain your lost ranking very soon. - all the best.
Just realised this thread was moved. Sorry for putting it in the wrong place, I was in a rush before work to ask this question and didnt notice a seperate SEO forum. So apologies to everyone for that. As for the SEO thank you for that. I have never been too proactive with my use of social media with the website. What I dont understand is, say I have a facebook page that had 50 people talking/using it regularly - how would that help my websites seo? how does google know that a facebook page called TheMarioBros relates to the website www.themariobros.net? Is it because I have filled in the profile on facebook with the web address? Or is it not My websites facebook page that helps - its people actually clicking LIKE/SHARE on one of my pages that helps? I understand about the backlinks, I havent been link building for a while - not only this I also had links to sites which no longer exist, or that no longer linked back to me - I purged all of these now and will continue to linkbuild in comments boxes on articles, forum posts etc. Is there any point in using one of these services to "buy" likes for facebook? or does google catch that and squash it? Thanks for your replies so far.
onsite SEO make your site load faster use clean and mean codes use good useful contents with your targeted keywords submit your site at google webmaster centre and verify / configure everything correct use H1 tags , alt tags (images ) , meta tags wisely offsite SEO build quality links / so no to low quality spammy links do comment on other blogs and sites participate at forums and share your exp. Try to list your site to top web directories Try to list your site at top local / regional directories Try to get good reviews at google local and other such citation sites Social create top class contents / blog posts so that visitors are compelled to share it on social media sites Make your presence felt at top social sites like twitter, facebook, pinterest , stumble etc. do actively participate on social media provide appropriate buttons on your site so that visitors can share your pages on social sites
I think you may have blocked from the google thats why your all webpages are disappeard so do quality seo and remove spammy backlings from the website you will soon get out of the spam box.
OK Thanks for all your input I am working through with it. In the mean time an SEO analysis tool found that themariobros.net did not redirect to www.themariobros.net so it looked like my site had duplicate content. Do you think this could have been something to do with it also?
