ok, my sports site is only 1 month old but I find the results of my promotion kind of depressing. I spent a few weeks posting messages everyday on sports forums linking to my sports articles on my site. I got a lot of hits but once I took a break from posting I lost 75 percent of that traffic. It's funny though because my stats showed over 500 people bookmarked the page in that 2 week period. You would think people who bookmarked the page would come back to it on a consistent basis. On the bright side I'm getting added to the search engines, but I'm not listed in any Yahoo sports directories and I feel until that happens I will get crappy traffic from Yahoo. I just started promoting on myspace and I'm adding a bunch of friends in the sports groups so over time that should be a nice traffic boom. I guess I have a few questions. For those that get good traffic currently how did you do the first few months? What was the key thing you did to get that frst big bump in traffic. I get the feeling the toughest part is getting those first 500-1000 or so dedicated viewers of your page. After you get those I'm guessing it gets easier with the word spreading and such. I have a lot of convidence in my website. I spend 3-5 hours a day updating it and I feel all the sports nuts out there would get a kick out of it once they found it. I'm not sure what to think at this point. Am I being to impatient? Maybe I should wait 6 months before making any serious judgements. I'm not one of these lazy people who are only starting a site to make an easy buck. I truely believe in my site and will do anything to get it to where I want it. Thanks for reading this, and if you have any suggestions feel free to post them. Thanks!
My Suggestion would be to submit articles at high PR rated Sites - This will get you a fast PR - Which in turn will get your site picked up by Search Engines - I hope this helps - Best of Luck!
Website is promotion and search engine marketing is a slow process wich takes hard work. It took me over a year to get Erie Pa a free classifieds website for erie to get it to rank #1 in MSN for the keyword "erie pa classifieds". But now I receive steady traffic! Try to do this at least once a week. 1. Submit to 1 directory a week 2. Create new content 3. Post on Forums 4. Submit articles After doing this for a couple of months most SE's will pick up your site, it will rank high and You will make $$$
There are many other ways to promote your sports site. I notice that you use forums, In order to get repeat visits, I recommend that you put an email capture form on your site so that you can collect peoples email address. You can invite people in the forums to join your newsletter or offer a freebie in exchange for their email address. With your own mailing list, Im sure you will get repeat visitors, just inform them about each useful updates about your site etc. and Im sure they will visit your site over and over again. Submitting articles to article directories will also help your site. Just be patient who knows your site might be successful after 6 months. Goodluck.
I agree, don't trust it. It is not accurate at all. I know I get quite a few bookmarks, but if I was going by my awstats then I would have around 150% of the people that use my site bookmark it which is impossible. My stats is average around the 40% - 60% of people that use my site bookmark it and I have seen well over 100% some times.
I think you're being a little ambitious expecting that your site is going to be successful after 6 months and extremely optimistic thinking that you were going to have success after only 1 month. My gardening blog has been going since January and is now only averaging 150 page views per day and this is in an area that has less competition than in sports related web sites. If you're in this for the long haul expect to not see too much for the next 18 months. Keep doing what you're doing and don't give it up. If the site is only half as decent as you say it is you will succeed.
I think you have to do more than jut poting in forums. As you say the traffic you'll get from this will just be a one off boost rather than constant traffic over time. Try some directory submissions which will be more of a stable source over time and help with SEO. Also look at doing some link eexchanges. Try to use a varied number of promotional methods to give you a well rounded traffic base.
I would suggest using AdWords if you have some money. This could be helpful as you can target special keywords and get traffic quickly and be sure that if you have good content, people will be coming back to your website.
I've managed to reach NO 1 at MSN just in 20 days for my main keyword. It is new domain, new host new site all is new. Now after 40 days all my main keywords are in top 3 position at MSN. I use "IBP" for telling me if my site is well optimized. Yahoo had me at NO 7 until few days before and over night I fall at place 30 for no reason. Google still doesn't see me.
I know what it is. The reason why I posted after it was answer is because I was about to post and I then went to do something else and then I came back to finish the post and by the time I had posted the answer had been given.
hmmm not so much as my second keyword, because my main keyword is two word phrase "mycity accommodation" but most traffics comes through "mycity" keyword. My site is ranked No2 for "mycity" @ MSN ... I've just noticed that for keyword "accommodation" in 46,380,401 results I'm in top 10 in just one month
