Warning: The stuff below is written by a VERY inexperienced person with SEO. Please realize this is just a crude write-up.
Its simply written out for your analysis and interpretation.

Please tell me if this is an effective SEO procedure. Please do not bash it, just give me constructive crtcism. I've currently been able to
rank my site this way (up until #6), so I know most of it will work fine.

1.) Find a niche that is within your marketing means, to me, this meant phrases that when in parenthesis, were all under 150,000.

For this niche, there are likely a few MEGA terms that are the SPIKE on the long tail. They real MEAT. The main PHRASES. Lets say that there are THREE. (LEts say its a Cat Food site. Your main terms would be: Cat Food, Organic Cat Food, Natural Cat Food)

2.) Create a sales page and content related to these mega terms. Make sure the keyword density is up to par. Have the three keywrods
within the header, paragraphs, etc. etc.

3.) Set up google analytics, HitTail, StatCOunter or all three on the site.

3.) Create an adwords campaign to jump start your procedure. Create ads revolving around the three terms listed in #1. Then use a keyword tool to branch out. Create many ads for many terms, all small ad gruops of course .Make sure your terms are pulling in sales. Find out which ones are. Make sure your site is optimized for these terms.

4.) Submit to many web directories. Release a press release. Do articles. Do social bookmarking. Focus on those main three phrases when
    submitting.

5.) WIthin several months, if done rihgt, you'll rank in the top ten (depending on the niche, but lets say that you CAN and DO rank within the top ten).

6.) Wait a bit more time, build more links. Sooner or later, you become #1 or #2 in the top ten for your main key phases.

(I've done all of the above, but #7 is where I plan to continue on from now on)

7.) Find out some of your top LONG TAIL phrases. You can see this from your records from your tracking software (analytics, Statcounter, etc.). Type these words into google. See where you rank for these terms. For me, its in the top 10.. but near the bottom. I want to boost up their rankings.

8.) IMPORTANT - Find your top 5-10 long tail phrases, and have many articles written for each term. For example: If one term is Poodle Dog Hats, have 10 articles written for Poodle Dog Hats. 5 of these articles you can place on the site, and 5 you can submit. BUT DO NOT do them all at once: Simply place the article #1 on the site, then Submit Aricle #2. Have article #2 LINK to Article #2 as a DEEP link to the website. At the bottom of the sites article (article #1), have a BUY NOW or SEE SALES PAGE button.

Do this ONCE a week. For each long tail phrase you have, submit 1 article a week and add 1 similar article to your site. This way your site will get updated, be content rich, and will have solid backlinks pointing towards it. In the meantime, also create articles and build links for your main page. In the end, 50% of traffic will come in via the long tail pages, and the other 50% will come in thru the main page.

    Good start for sure...

Another thing to add which is extremely important is evaluating the top 10 websites for your specific keywords.

Yes this is market research and takes some time but you should be tracking your competition, finding out their links/other SEO and devising strategies to beat them. It's the only way to make sure you can rank #1 for keywords, make 100% sure where the competition stands and find out what it will take to beat them out.

Newviewit, thanks, yes I agree. This was all stated from my own experience with a small niche.

    --

To add to my list -- I'd also like to create at least 1 blog for my main term(s) and have this also have articles on it and have it link back to the main site.

I'd also like to set up a squidoo lens. I'd also create a video and have it submitted to all the major video sites. (I did this early on with this niche it was a great way to sort of put my presence in the search engines)

Do you guys think that its a good idea to have a stockpile of pre-written articles set up so you can just submit one article each week for each of your most important terms?

Is 1/week too high / too low?

    Any suggestions on this guys?

Basically I'd just love a routine I do for SEO instead of obsessing about it everyday and getting nothing done. I'd like to just have a few set things I do every day or every week to "bodybuild" my seo..
