Thanks Steve. Although, I doubt they really bother doing many manual tweaks, they simply don't have to, they just win due to age/backlinks/ and measure of click through. It's positive feed back, every knows Google so everyone clicks through to them....

But you're right, fighting a loosing battle simply wont do. Catching the main keywords/phrases seems to be a thing of the past, I'll just have to settle with the few odds and ends that Google (et al.) hasn't yet covered


I dread the day when you use a search engine to search all of the sites that the search engine owns (except a handfull). I do feel like it's heading that way though, what with:

Google Maps
Google Books
Google News
Google Images
Google Vidoes /You tube
Google Answers / Wikki
Google Traslation
Google rss news feed (feedburner)
Google Blogs
Google Docs
Google Scholar
Google Groups
Google Code
Google Earth
Google Webbrowser
Google Photo organization
Google 3d Modeling application (sketchup)
Google Instant messageing (google talk)
Google Social Networking (google buzz)
Google email (gmail)
Google mobile reader
Google Voice
Google Shopper
Google Advertising (adsense and adwords and double click)
Google website optimiser

and just in case they hadn't ventured out into your domain:
Google sites ..(so they can make sure they swamp the first page for everything)

it wont be long until they have:
Google UK SEO services,
Google inda SEO services,
Google photographic Dictionary,
etc etc
[even if you provide services that they don't... that's what really annoys me]

I think I'm going to start using search engines that hides Google services, it's getting a bit of a joke ....
