my search has gone screwy on wp

I started a new site earlier in the week using WP. I am using the most current version just out.

The search was working completely fine. I tested a couple keywords and the proper articles came up. But this morning when I tried it out, it has stopped working.

It keeps redirectin back to the home page. I tested words that do not even exist on the home page but rather come from other pages but it just won't work.

So the only thing I changed was I added a redirect 301 line to my htaccess because I needed to redirect one page. Thinking that was the problem, I reinstated the old htaccess.

But to no avail, the search won't work. I know it is difficult to trouble shoot someone else's work but if anyone has any suggestion at what it might be, I would be happy.

I don't know what else to check since I have not added any plugins or changed any code.

    thx very much

Have you tried restoring a default version of search.php and searchform.php?
Also, a link to your blog would come in handy.

Yes I did restore the default version of the search files. I even used only the default theme in the thought that my theme had messed something up. But still it wouldn't work.

I finally got so frustrated this morning and just deleted everything and started over. I kept my database and dumped it when I installed everything from scratch again.

I added all my plugins one by one so I could watch what was happening. I think I found the problem but it still is maddening.

I had this site up previously - small site - only 1 really long page but it was indexed and already had backlinks. So my old site was index.html. When I went WP, the new home page is index.php so I left the old page up and used a 301 to redirect to the new index page.

When I remove the old index page from the server, the search works - when I leave the old index page on the server, the search screws up.

Anyway, to save myself further grief, I just removed the old index file but I should have been able (I think - lol) to figure out a way to make the redirect work the new version of wp.
