My PayPal account has become "limited..." What could have caused this?

Well, I've been getting getting paid from various sites/people to do GFX work for them. This morning I got an email stating that my PayPal account will be closed....

"As part of our security measures, we regularly screen activity in the
PayPal system. During a recent screening, we noticed an issue regarding
    your account.

We are very sorry, but in accordance with the PayPal User Agreement, we are no longer able to have you as a customer.

We have had to close your account for the following reason:

We have observed activity in this account that is unusual or potentially
    high risk.

We apologize for any inconvenience this account closure may cause. You may
still log in to PayPal to view your transactions history and personal
    information for a limited time.

The funds in your account will be held for 180 days, due to the risk of
outstanding chargebacks and complaints. After 180 days, any remaining funds will be available to you for withdrawal."

There was more, but it that part wasn't very important. What could have caused this and is there a way to "unlimit" myself before 180 days? I am using a Premier account. Could the fact that I was receiving gift payments from people across the world raise the flag? I mean is that really a problem? Its not as if I was moving $100 or doing anything fraudulent. Most of my transaction were like $5-$10. Or could it be the fact that my PayPal name is Tony Bear (Fictitious name) and not the name that I signed up under my bank. Furthermore, I only have like $75 on the account so I can't possibly find this suspicious...If I cannot unlimit account how can I withdraw $ after the 180 days? Will I be able to start all over again using the same email account/bank account?

    Any advise would be great.

    Thanks,

    -Tony

PS - I have nothing to hide so if you have any questions I'd be glad to answer it.

    UR A/C GOT BANNED .
so create new e-mail and create new paypal .
if any cc attached to it then call ur cc company to deactivate it .
if any bank a/c already added and u forgot to remove before ban then u have to add new bank a/c in your new a/c .

The best thing to do in such circumstances is to personally call Paypal support and ask for reasons. But I do wonder why you used a fictitious name to register? If your name on Paypal does not match with that on your bank account.. you would never be able to do withdrawal... even after 180 days!
As fas as the reasons for limitation, I guess your account might have seen payments coming from number of fictitious/suspicious accounts! :(

    @RightMan

I made the account a couple years not thinking that I would do much with it. Stupid mistake now that I think about it... Why would I not be able to with the account after 180 days? I don't know how it works and hopefully you have the knowledge to tell me exactly what happens after 180 days and how I can reclaim my money. I have already linked my bank account to the PayPal account so once I can move funds can't I just transfer the amount directly into my checking account? If they does not work, can I just ask them to mail me a check (if this is possible can I address who to give it to)?

    Thanks for you insight.

If your bank account name does not match with the name of your paypal then you are no longer eligible to withdrawal your funds in ur bank account even after 180 days.

As rightly pointed out by Sweatlana, for withdrawal to bank account, the name that appears on your bank account should match with that on Paypal.

You can request a check too... but the same would be issued only in the name that appears on your Paypal account and can be encashed only in the country where you have officially declared your location to be! If either of these does not match, you would not be able to encash the check too :(

I talked to my parents about this. They told me not to worry because if I am unable to transfer the funds directly into my verified and link bank account then I can request the check. They said that I can also cash the check and everything will be fine as long as no "Tony Bear" shows up and decides to take it back or dispute it.

I hope that such a fiend does not exist.

Eh! My name's Tony Bear, that's my check!

    No, just kidding. :p

So PayPal will send you the check even if your names don't match?

Good luck in getting your money :)

I don't see why one would ever try to sign up with Paypal with a false name? It's not like you would sign up with your local bank with a fake name unless you are fraudulent, so why do people take it so much more relaxed online? It's not, fraud happens everywhere, money laundering policies are in effect on- and offline and just because no one is by your computer checking your id when signing up, there's no good reason to use a fraudulent name when it comes to money. Why do people think it's like a big game play, like it's not real money? But then when they can't withdraw it, then they start like the biggest fuzz ever.

Be glad if you ever see those $75, if it was me on the other end (Paypal support) I would make d*m sure you learned the lesson and learned it well by confiscating the funds and making it unavailable to you. Also, receiving money as "gift" in large number of transactions will raise suspicion flags, don't do that. Paypal is a company, providing a service that you are using, pay their price or suffer the consequences when they limit, freeze or cancel your account. And if you get banned with your real name account, you are banned for life and can never again have a personal Paypal account.

If you want to do business, do that, not bullshit!

I just hope that your parents are right and you are able to encash your own funds... but frankly, reality suggests otherwise.
If anybody could encash a check issued in anybody else's name... then the 'checks' would become the most unsecure instrument and would not have gained this wider acceptance! :(

No need to throw a fit. I made it years ago when I was underage and thought that it'd be cool to have a PayPal account. Seeing as how I only have $75 dollars in it, they'd be stupid to not give me back my money because they can't do that. Can you imagine them closing down accounts and flipping a coin on whether or not to give back $ to limited accounts? Their reputation would be ruined.

Point being, you broke the rules, how do you expect to be compensated or "done right" when you were the first offender yourself?

as for the reason your account was banned i am very unsure....what might have prompted it..
Have you been using various ip address to access your paypal account of late???
paypal has had to block fitious account with dirent location country and ip addrrss from other zone but i cant tie that on yours..

As for the suspect of having different names i am very unsure as i am a living proof of that.. I have two different names on my account.. my the surname on my bank acount and card account is different from the last name on my paypal account yet i still use my account .... although i had to contact paypal on several occassion before adding my card details to my card account as i already had a paypal account in a diffrent last name dan my on my card...

to this day whenever i make payment with paypal from ebay, my delivery information is always the name on the paypal detail which is different from the card details , even wen i use my card through paypal.

my best advice is to contact paypal customer service email them but if u want quick response call them and ask for the reason of the suspension and defend yourself if you have to

or like others suggested. go open a new paypal account with new bank card details... the choice is all yours
