My Paid Links Experiment

    Hi Guys,

I have just started an experiment with a paid link service cyberlink pro. I thought that members of DP would benefit from the results (either good and bad) and also hope you could provide feedback on how I set up the experiment and the writing style because I think it is quality infomation but want to make sure its easil understandable.

Anyway you can find the original info at my blog:http://www.scribblescratch.com/cyber-link-pro-part-1-the-product/

Let me know what you think? Aslo any guesses as to how it will perform would be interesting.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    Cyber Link Pro
    What is it?

Basically Cyberlink Pro is a link brokerage service dealing in mass link purchases. It offers purchases ranging from 1000 links up to 1 million links for a monthly fee. Links are placed various ways via articles on over a thousand different websites.

    How It works

Cyberlink Pro has an inventory of over 100,000 articles housed on over a thousand websites. Links are placed automatically several ways on these pages. You can search through the inventory to purchase links related to your topic either manuually (individual articles) or automatically (selecting a topic).

To start with you purchase a link package of choice. 1000 links for $19.95/montth up to 40,000 links at $269.95/month (link packages up to 1,000,000 can be ordered by contacting them). Once you purchase a package you get a set number of links you can use three ways:

Article Target Pages – Your link will be instantly placed at the bottom of your chosen articles
Category Target Pages – Your link will be placed at the bottom of all pages for a certain category (100 links)
Keyword Target Pages – Links are placed in the body of an article for chosen keywords
You then set up a target page and anchor text and simply search through the inventory to find links you would like to purchase.

    Claims

Cyberlink Pro is definitely not a boastful product with only some mild claims. Essentially it implies you will get higher rankings at all three major search engines and thus more traffic and more profit for your website.

    Proof Provided

Cyberlink Pro has the usual testimonials with each offering an email address for references. Additionally it provides one case study for www.swordsoftheeast.com, for the keyphrase “Samurai Swords for sale”. I checked it out in google and it is ranked number 1 for me.

    My optimisms

The program seems fairly simple. A large number of links with a chosen anchor text would be beneficial to any site no matter the quality of the links. I think for a niche site you could expect a fairly decent return on your investment. Some other positive signs I noticed include:

System runs cron jobs every 3 days so that pages meet requirements
Only so many links per page is sold
Thousands of pages to choose from and lots of categories so you can targeted links
    Sites have different IP addresses

    My reservations

The price is cheap but is it too cheap? Is the quality so low that even a high number of links will have little effect? There are a few unanswered questions, and small pieces of information missing which cause me some reservations. My reservations include:

How many links per page exactly are allowed
Do the individual pages have any link juice at all
Are there any guidelines to what links can be placed on a page. I don’t want my health link to be surrounded by tech links for example.
Its all automated and generally I prefer some human contact
Are the articles unique because 100,000 unique articles could be difficult to find.
Site refers to bing as MSN still.

Here is Part 2: The Experiment

    Intro:

This experiment is designed to test the validity of the claims made by cyberlink pro. In essence will purchasing a package with the company lead to high search engine rankings for my test subject. If you have not read part 1 of this series please read that first so you get a better understanding of the product.

    Overview:

The product looks like it could improve the rankings for a niche keyphrase as opposed to ranking 1st for “make money”. I think a full month would be enough time to see if it the program works. However I think 3 months would be needed to find out the success (or failure) of the program to its full extent. I have chosen the lowest package of 1000 links and a niche keyword because I believe I will be able to see results (and also I am cheap).

    Test Subject:

So for this experiment I am sacrificing my very small humor blog www.crazyfunk.com. It is 6 months old has some established roots but does not figure very well in the search engines for its main keyphrase. The main keyphrase of the site is “crazy news”.

    Measures:

The measures of the experiment will include:

    Pagerank
No. of backlinks (by yahoo site explorer)
Search Engine ranking for “crazy news”
    Variables:

All good experiments must include the variables involved. Its important to limit the variables so that we can be more certain that cyberlink pro was responsible for the changes to the rankings.

No on page optimization changes will be made throughout the experiment.
No other link building techniques will be employed
Site has been unchanged for a month before the experiment so that its starting position is a true reflection of the site
However there are a number of variables I cant control which may influence the results

Content will continue to be added and some content may become particulary popular or help improve rankings
This experiment may give the site added exposure which could influence results
External sites could link to it

    Goals:

So what would constitute a success or failure for the product. I will set two timeframes for the product.

    1 Month

Hugely Successful: The site ranks top 20.

Mildly Successful: The site improves its rankings by more than 20 spots.

Unsuccessful: The sites rankings do not improve or become worse.

    3 Months

Hugely Successful: The site ranks top 3

Mildly Successful: The site ranks top 20

Unsuccessful: The site ranks outside the top 20

    Last one- The starting Point

Now it is time for the fun part. The Experiment. So the first two things I need to do is record the results of the website as well as purchasing and setting up the links. The starting results of the website are as follows:

    -------------------------------

    Date: October 4, 2009
    Site: Crazyfunk.com
    Pagerank: 3
    Inlinks: 347
    Search Engine Position: 90
Visitors via search engines (for the term crazy news, per month): 1

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Now to purchase the links. I chose the $19.95/month package which gives me 1000 one-way backlinks. It is a paypal subscription service handled through clickbank. Once purchased you set up your login information and then you have to activate your account. They say it can take up to 5 hours before you can add your links but I was able to do it immediately.

The site can seem daunting at first but after 5 minutes it becomes obvious to use. As mentioned previously there are 3 types of links I can purchase. I decided to go for an equal mix of each and purchased 333 article links for the category humor. I just let the software automatically pick the articles because I did not want to search for 333 links. I then bought 300 category links as you purchase in groups of 100. Again the category was humor. I then went to buy keyword links for the text “crazy news”. Unfortunately none were available so I bought further article and category links. (please see part 1 for more info on the link types).

Overall I have 400 article links and 600 category links. I decided all anchor text would be “crazy news” so it would have the most effect for the purpose of this experiment. Once you purchase the links you can view them immediately on the articles and you can remove or change the links at any time. So far I am pretty impressed.

One final test for the service. I will send them an email with a few queries and see if they get back to me, how long it takes them and the quality of the response. Generally the quality of any online service can be measured by the quality of the support.

I will post again when I have some results (hopefully not to long), so keep an eye out for it.

Just made a new post with results after 3 days:

    http://www.scribblescratch.com/cyber-link-pro-part-4-first-results

In summary google ranking went from 90 to 12! I dont think this is solely because of the purchased links. I think it may a delayed movement because of a title change I did a while ago where I included the keyphrase "crazy news" in the title. It is a late reaction by google however but I think the jump was too big and too fast to just be the paid links.

    Any other theories?

Well I wasnt going to go for "lose weight" or "make money". Adwords puts it at 18,000 searches a month so I thought it had some merit to chase.

What is quite funny is that trooperbill said it was too easy to achieve, then the very next post Funnksoul wanted a more obscure keyword to target for. I cant win :)

    Hi there,

    thanks for doing this experiment!

Are you able to verify after you choose the links that those sites are indeed linking to you?

If this is a yes can you post a few links for the websites that are now linking to you. This would be very helpful.

By the way, I like your blog but there is some problem with it showing in my browsers (chrome, ie and ff). I have never experienced this before, only the top part of the screen shows and then it is impossible to scroll down. Copying the sourcecode and putting it into dreamweaver was the only way I could view your site! Weird, never happened before...

@ tropical once you add the links you can view each individual page in your account. I clicked on a few and my link was visible on all the pages. It was suprisingly simple actually. Anyway my inlinks went from 347 to 1200 + so it seems yahoo site explorer has found the links as well.

I am going to update my blogs theme anyway but I appreciate the feedback.

You say your search term show a decent amount of searches in Adwords, but did it give you any extra traffic being ranked 12th..

Thanks for the info I may take a look into this site..

I agree. Can you try this experiment with a more searched for keyword phrase? :) Also, do you have fears of being penalized by Google?

Who writes the articles they use and how does the article part work? Articles are complicated so I do not understand how this part of what they do would work.

No extra traffic yet from being ranked 12th. I may repeat the experiment with a more searched for keyword but if this experiement doesnt work then there would be no point.

Cant be penalized for buying links. Worst that can happen is the links are devalued. So not too worried there.

The articles have already been written by various authors. Not too sure if they are unique or what the author gets out of the deal though.

Don't take this the wrong way but your experiment is flawed from the beginning. If you want to rank for a keyword then you need to get text links from other websites with that keyword in the link. ex: man that was some crazy news the other night.

If there is only 1 search a day for "crazy news" then you're not going to get much visitors even if you rank first.

SEO is easy. #1 Pick your keywords carefully #2 Have content on your site with those keywords #3 Get lots of text links to your site with those keywords

If you don't do those 3 steps then what are you doing? And how can you expect any results?

Did you even read the experiment? I have 1000 links with crazy news anchor text pointing to my site. Google adwords shows 18,100 searche a month which I am pretty sure I have already mentioned.

Im not quite sure what you are referring too????

Got 5 searches for the term crazy news so far this month which a tiny increase and also had a few visitors from DP as well :)
