My PageRank and backlinks tool - with possibility of newer PR

I made a site with a PageRank lookup and backlinks tool.

    http://www.searchengineengine.com

The tool has a link to the Google search features page for rank information on a URL. This page lists rank values which appear to be more current PageRank values than the Toolbar displays. I'm surprised that no one thought to share this before (at least I don't think anyone has).

You can also see backlinks for a URL according to Google, Yahoo, and MSN if you check the backlinks option.

Source code for the PageRank function is here:
    http://www.searchengineengine.com/files/pagerank-code.txt

    Feedback/criticisms would be appreciated :)

Well, I hope you are wrong about these "real PageRank" numbers, else I am soon to lose half my web site visitors...

    Thanks for that.
All the other pagerank tools I've seen return exactly what is shown in my browser (firefox with PR extension).
You script is returning results more like what I'm hoping to see after the next PR update, and certainly look more realistic than the toolbar PR

Why thank you :) Web design/prettiness is certainly not one of my better skills. It took me longer to code the damn CSS layout than to code the functions...

As I explained on the site, most pagerank scripts get their PR values the way the toolbar presumably does--by doing a features check with "info:" prepended to the URL (for the URL input to the checksum function and query variable). I just chop off the "info:" prefix, which gives a larger list of "Rank:" values. As I say on the site, it is unclear what these represent; but since newer sites that the toolbar doesn't recognize appear to have PR values that are sensible, and since the PR values seem to fluctuate (e.g., www.espn.go.com has been varying from PR8 to PR9 and back the past couple days), there is reason to believe they are more accurate/more current than Toolbar PR.

for my PR6 site. what does that mean? Its hosted on what looks like a google page. I have never seen this before?

    thanks

Well I for one hope the future PR the tool came back with is accurate as it is around what I expect to have, come the next update.

If this does prove to be accurate then it is an excellent piece of work.

Hmm... the link to my blog when I clicked on it had an empty page, how did your tool calculate it has a real pagerank of 3 from no data?

Well, we may just be fooling ourselves, but it does look promising. Especially when I compare my site to that of my competitors :p

Many thanks for that tool. Very useful, and I'm hoping the "real" pagerank you report is accurate.

Er... the code gets data from google then calculates the PR from that data, doesn't it? So when I saw the URL returning empty data I was wondering how it was getting PR 3 when there was no data...

Thank you for the compliments, they are much appreciated :)

Well, you wouldn't be, because if that is the current PR then you're getting all your visitors with it anyway :p But an illogical value might be a www/non-www prefix issue or a datacenter issue or something.

The tool uses www.google.com for its datacenter (I might add a datacenter selection box at some point), and its server is located in PA, so the datacenter used is 64.233.161.99.

In all likelihood this is a datacenter issue. The links provided are to www.google.com, so you will see your local datacenter results.

    Thank you very much :)

I would guess this is a datacenter issue.

I made some changes to the tool:
    • The URL column links to the Google XML page for the URL.
    • The Toolbar PageRank column links to the actual Toolbar PageRank page.
    • Got rid of the show crawldate button, because it seemed uneccessary.
    • Added some comments to the source code and changed the getrank() function.

Also added some explanatory comments to the results page. Let me know if they don't explain things well.

My new site will have a pagerank of 4. Not to bad though I would love to get a pagernak 5 for the first update.
