You would need atleast a dsl line. T1 would be better but cost alot more.
Dsl needs a deidcated Ip number or buy one if you can. Some dsl offer it for more money.

I think in the long run unless you have alot of websites your better of just buying hosting. You would need backup power for any server and that can cost alot of money. Most hosting sites have mutiple internet lines in case one goes down servers saty up.

Recommend just buying a dedicated UK server. The cost will be cheaper.

Yeah, cheers guys, i though it would be too expensive in the UK.

Thats why you dont hear about guys starting billion dollar bussiness in their garage over here - its alway in america.

Google would never have existed if a UK guy dreamed it up, it would have ben too expensive to get started.

    Nor would youtube,

BT is killing our web entrepreneurs.

I think you'll find that most startups in the USA use dedicated servers or colocation in datacenters rather than run their server from home. it has nothing to do with broadband speeds or BT.

Agent Smith is right, buy a managed dedicated UK server. It will be much better on the long term since administration tasks and hardware issue are always a pain if you don't have the experience to deal with them.

If you want better value in the long run, buy your own server hardware and colocate it in a datacenter.

    Hi

I would suggest buying a server and colocating it at a nearby dc.
