Find some people to exchange posts with. I think I saw a site that was organized for exchanging posts if anyone has the link.

I usually create 5 aliases and post back and forth with myself to give the allure of activity until there actually is some.

Ha ha, I have to admit to doing the same thing, it's the only way to kick start things and set the tone within the forum. Or you could delegate some of the workload..if your mates are feeling helpful get them to chat on the forums while you spend your time finding a way to wage war on the other site...good luck bro
(give the forum thing time! )

p.s. When you find a regular/keen poster try and recruit them (e.g. a moderator), they will feel valued and take some of the workload off of your hands

Lol They probably have a big word of mouth thing going at the schools in UK due to the usefulness of the site. Someone from the UK could pretty much get there questions answered in no time on almost any school related subject. The only thing you can really do is do an offline campaign with some college and highschool newspapers etc.

Your site looks alot more commerical than there's and some people might look at that as meaning that they are more restricted in what they can post.

    Some very good suggestions here:
    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=9821

Be sure all of your email goes out with active links in the sig for the forum or with urls in the text to encourage (re)visits - autoresponders, helpdesk, in your email client, etc.

Nothing kills a forum like notification messages, etc. without a clickable link to view the info. Most of the modern scripts have basic responses with links built into the defaults, be sure they work well if you edit the text. It is a good idea to tweak the text to excite your visitors, and encourage revisits.

First, kudos for having the cajhones to take on such a formidable foe.

It is essential that you have strategic goals and also specific activities that you must do each day (checklists are a good tool here) to get to your goals.

The easiest thing in the world is to get so overwhelmed or distracted that you waste time on activities that don't align with your goals.

Unfortunately Student-Forum has a problem here ! The Student Room doesn't allow links in signatures to their competitors.

Members who do so 1) Are requested to remove the link from their signatures
    if that fails,
    2) Have their signatures edited.
    3) Membership from the forum is revoked.

Similarly any member of The Student Room found using the Private Message system to promote their board is immediately removed upon discovery.

Sadly its only business sense that The Student Room looks after it's own welfare by limiting the actions of others, by legal means!

So although I sympathise with Student-Forums for their plight, given that The Student Room has a fairly steady grasp on the market; using The Student Room as their advertising medium simply isn't going to work.

However, I do wish Student-Forums the best of luck in his enterprise.

    Regards

    Andrew.

I have a feeling that you will have trouble getting your site to rival TSR/UKL in terms of members. TSR/UKL is a very old and established community that has thousands and thousands of members. I'm not sure how much of the student demographic is left for you to entice to your site.

Edit: Oops, feel free to ignore this. I just raised a dead thread unintentionally for the first time in 5 years of foruming. =/
