My new slowly rising lovechild

I'd appreciate it if you could review my new baby, a website that I've launched a short time ago. This is the website -->

    http://www.fruitylyrics.com

It's a lyrics website that has daily updates and offers a somewhat cleaner look then most other websites for this genre, as you are all probably aware of.

I've also tried to come up with a way to serve people that browse lyrics on their mobile / pda / psp. Most of the time it works great and the visitor is recognized and forwarded to a "light"-version of the page, but I believe it's not 100% working...

sweet header - I also like the colouring - I would say perhaps font's are too big though - maybe make them adjustable?

    Hi!

There are a few things I would suggest:

The site is too wide for 1024x768 and 800x600 resolution (at least in Firefox). I would suggest making it at least fit 1024x768 to make it usable for more people.

I would suggest moving to a 2-column format to help with space concerns. The rest of this is purely opinion but could make your site a bit more attractive and useful.

There's a bit of extra stuff on the sides that could go:
    • Quantcast
    • The "execution" notice in the bottom right
    • The additional search bar (bottom left)

The adsense block below the bottom menu bar should go above the bottom menu bar. I would also decrease the space between each menu item.

In my opinion, the order of the (only) side menu should go in this order:
    • Popular
    • Partners
    • links
    • Adsense skyscraper

    Cheers!

    Griffin

@dotWdot: Thanks, friend of mine created the header. I'll tell him I finally found someone that likes it, just kidding! ;) Good point about the font size. The reason behind this was to make it easy to read, but maybe it's a little over the top.

@Nectarine: Thanks for sharing your view. I'll be sure to test things out on a lower screen resolution! About the other remarks; I'll definitely think about them. The quantcast was nice to see progress, but it's not very important. Plus it gives errors on validating.

    Greets,

    Interesting concept.

    Here is my feedback:

The navigation is okay and finding stuff is easy.
    Here are my views:

    1. The site is simple and navigation is easy
    2. Site is friendly

Here're a few points to make the site better:

    1. Get a darker green as opposed to a lighter green
    2. Make fonts smaller. Large fonts look amateurish-use css
    3. Horizontal scroll? (set page attributes to "0" to correct that)
    4. Get more content (unique)
    5. :)

    Hi Jimjames3000,

Thanks for your sharing your opinion. By getting "a darker green as opposed to a lighter green", you mean the lines with lyrics that are now light-dark-light-dark? Make the difference between those to a little bit bigger?

I'm for sure going to look into making the smaller fonts and getting rid of the horizontal scroll in lower screen resolutions.

About the content, it's hard to get unique content for these websites. The best thing to do, is getting the new lyrics as soon as possible. Which is ofcourse easier said then done. And on top of this, let the searchengines crawl the new lyrics right away. But that would mean that you'd have to make a page with the newly added pages, and mention that in a sitemap. And this would mean, that you'd give competitors easy access to your newest stuff. Or are there any other solutions to tell searchengines that you have new content right away?

    Greets!

(btw the 5th point is the best :D)

    Hello.

I had a chance to go through your site. The items I have considered for this review:

    • Logo
    • Header
    • Domain Name
    • Template Design
    • Navigation
    • Content

    My Review

    Logo
    There is no logo

    Header
I think that your header should include your domain name. Under the domain name should be a catchy phrase to quickly describe your site. Example: "your place popular music lyrics"

    Domain
Excellent and to the point domain name

    Template Design
Not to keen on the overall site design. I think that the green idea can be taken beyond what it is now. It is a challenging color to use but I think you can grasp what you are trying to do.

    Navigation
I think that you could add some more navigation buttons at the top. These could include "Most Popular", "Top 10" "Bottom 10" and so on....

    Content
Your main content on the home page could provide an explanation of what your site is all about.

These are some of my thoughts. I hope that helps a bit.
    Respectfully.

    @ Lhlalyam:

Thanks for the review! I agree with you on the fact that the header should contain the domain name, but the " catchy phrase" is already in it! It might not be as catchy as it could, but hey I'm not a professional catchphrase creator. It's borrowed a bit from CoolBest ;)

Regarding the design and the logo. I don't have any experience regarding that. I've seen some "logo competitions" going on here at DP, maybe I'll give that a shot, the winner can also try pimp the design a bit. Cause I agree with you that it's a bit off.

However it is also important that it keeps its clean and easy-to-view look. Since this is one of the important advantages over the main competition. It's good to make it look nice, but not too fancy and crowded.

Thanks again for you thoughts it's very much appreciated. In previous forums I visited reviews were often only: "looks good, crappy content, good luck". It's nice to hear some serious opinions that go along with reasons for it!

I also think that the header should be more site oriented cuz the flower design and the boxes to the right don't explain what the sites about... looks like a typical brush mess design... good start tho it will take a while to tweak but that's half the fun.

Good to see you doing a follow-up with regards to the reviews.

I agree with you on keeping a site clean and simple. This all depends on the designer. I've had my share of people claiming to be able to design but not exactly what you want....

I always recommend a designer that I found after many others... and he is quite impressive... I've also tried the contests... but thats a matter of timing... sometimes you will get a good response because designers are waiting for contests... other times you'll only get a few...

The person that I'd recommend is Spirit of 1970. He did a site template for me. This is his DP Link. If your interested in viewing it.... please pm me... and I'll show you...

    Keep in touch!
    Respectfully,
    Lhlalyam

Your logo is too heavy 100KB, . Turn into a PNG or decrease the jpg quality.

Also your adsense is off the page. (I'm using FireFox 2.0.0.8)

Just on the SEO Side of the site it's great. Have you thought about maybe having a RSS feed? I don't like the font used on the site maybe thats something you should think about upgrading?

Thanks Cardiff, I did put some effort into the SEO.

About the font; you mean the type or the size? The size is a bit too big, I agree. But the type isn't that bad, or is it? :p
Concerning the RSS; I'm trying to get that done for the top10, but I have no experience with this. Hence I'm playing a bit to get that done eventually.

Currently I'm trying to shift everything, so it all fits under the header and setting the font to a smaller size. Because of reducing the size of the font, this will easily fit I guess. Furthermore I'm looking for a way to create a real menu on the left-side, with navigation - partners - links, as sort of proposed in the thread before. However I don't have much time atm and I'm not very good in all of this, so it will take a while before it gets done, unless I find someone that can do it for me :p

    Greets,

I would use Arial 12, It's mainly the partners font that I hate. :)
