I am sure this has been around for a while, but I just started using this

    http://translate.google.com

this is great for dealing with foreign customers. Normally I would just respond to them in english with ' i don't speak spanish ' now I can have full conversations in multiple languages.

Has anyone else used this before ?

Usable if you want to understand what is written, but the outcome looks pretty silly if you wish to translate your thoughts in another language.
Especially the rare and more complex ones (mine is Bulgarian and anytime a non speaker tries to translate an add from english it makes a really good laugh :D)

If you make your phrases as simple as possible - it is useful!

yeah, it is also my favorite tool, i use it daily. Anyone have this tool script? I have one translate relative domain, and it can bring about 100UV per day without promoting. so i think it is good to use it to build site.

Actually, I needed to translate some phrases recently, in languages that I know a little of, and found that bablefish was a lot better than google - all of the automatic translators are inevitably clumsy, but the babelfish one was coping a lot better with different word orders and colloquialisms

I like google translation too. I've seen some truly hilarious results though. I use a global translator plugin on some of my sites that caches translations from Google translate.

Some of the things that I've found to help make the translations work better. 1) Avoid contractions... don't can't won't for some reason are not handled well by the translation engines. 2) Try to avoid slang or acronyms. 3) try to avoid quant or colloquial sayings. Unfortunately for a general website this sometimes makes you feel as though you're working inside a very tight restriction. I know I haven't followed those three suggestions very well myself, but for translating custom emails/letters/etc. It can get the point across.

(It can be funny when names get translated - it would be nice if there were a way to "tag" something as a name so as to avoid translation.... i.e. Spanish - English Manuel Guerra get's translated Manuel War. It would be nice to be able to tag <propername> )

That's really a great tool. I also use it on my blogs so that more visitors can easily read and understand my content in their own language.

it is indeed an excellent tool. however please note that translation between languages sometimes results in un-readable text. especially between latin and non-latin languages
