Chances of changing the world can be slim to none, but that was not the case for four ordinary boys. These boys took it upon themselves to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others in the series “The Buried Life”. They go on an adventure of a lifetime making anything possible, traveling cross-country to fulfill their wildest dreams and aspirations.
Relying on guts, goodwill, and gumption Dave, Ben, Duncan, and Jonnie travel the globe in a purple bus named Penelope just to complete their list of things they want to do before they die. Along the way, they challenge a random person by asking the ultimate question – “What do YOU want to do before you die.” The guys promised before they started that for each item they cross off, they must help a perfect stranger accomplish one of their goals. Just a few examples were reuniting a father and son who haven’t spoken for 17 years, helping a man find his long lost love, and helping a daughter see her mother’s grave site for the first time. The boys change a person’s life, one item at a time.
Their journey began in the summer of 2006 as they conversed about what was ahead of them in the future. The boys congregated and created a list of the things they want to do most in life. Their acts of kindness started off slowly as they had to fundraise and find financial support. However, as they became more dedicated to the list, they had the chance to cross of #53: start a television show. With the support of MTV in 2009, the boys had their first premiere of the show “The Buried Life.”
As the camera rolls, the guys trek through Canada and the United States hoping to cross off the “100 things to do before they die.” The list consists of everything from playing basketball with President Obama and delivering a baby to boxing in a professional boxing match. Now not every attempt comes out successful; the boys have had their share of failure. Nevertheless, the boys cannot cross out the item unless it has been completed so some may take a few chances to overcome. Not everything works out but they always stay true to themselves, and their promise to the list. With commitment and dedication, the boys have successfully crossed off 64 items on the list.
This show is a great inspiration to everyone as it shows that nothing is impossible. As they cross off their list, it may encourage others to create a list of their own. Another remarkable aspect of the show is that the spirit of success draws the attention of the audience. It has that certain degree of power that comes with hard work and persistence. On the downfall, the show’s content and language can be more geared towards adults. Some events that take place throughout the show can be somewhat vulgar.
In the end, “The Buried Life” indicates that everyone has an incredible story to tell and to live. The list is their lives; it defines them, brings them together, and in that they share the dreams, successes, and innermost desires. “The Buried Life” is an inspirational, soul searching experience that proves to show anything is possible. With that said, what do you want to do before you die?
