Call police and they will file a missing item report. This may not help in short term but in long run, if the thief is cought and they take all the items from the house and if one of the item happens to be your laptop then they will contact you. Its long shot but doesnt hurt to notify police. But then, if the thief has sold it... then its really hard to find it... Good luck.
i know of 2 stolen laptops that were traced and recovered and that was because of the startup programs logging on to the net and calling for work units from the seti@home project, so if you have something like that then you can, you can also ask your isp to look up for it connecting to the net if you have it set to connect on startup.
if u had a genuine copy of vista probably they could help (i dunno if they doo) but maybe they can track the license when ur comp gets updated and track the ip

It's not impossible to trace the physical location of an IP, I have done it on my own IP accurate within 100m. Although the IP is based on the internet connection, not the computer, so I doubt that IP will help you (he probably has a new IP).
