My keyword has 40.000 searches month - Is this good?

I will optimize my site for a keyword that has about 40.000 searches/month in Google.com The competition is about 23.000.000 websites.

Is 40.000 good enough to get some decent traffic from?

If I get the 7:th position in the search results how many visitors should I have per month from all the 40.000?

waw interesting project, the more research you will do before you start the better decision you will make

    and for positions traffic

    1st position 30%
    2nd position 15%
    3rd position 7%
    4th position 5%
    5th position 4%
    6th position 4%
    7th position 2%
    8th position 2%
    9th position 3%
    10th position 5%

    sec. page

    1st position 6%

but it depend on many other things including page title and description and how attractive they are

where did you get this from? odd it only adds up to 77% or 83% with the second page. surely you can only count percentages of actual clicks which have to add up to 100%? or are the rest adsense?

    ..and you're better off being 10th or 11th, than 5th to 9th?

    not seen these figures before.

so using this, 2% of 40k is 800 per month.

These are statistical info. I got them from Google SEO Secrets a famous SEO book, you can google it to know.

for the rest they go to other pages and Adsense as you mentioned:)

40,000 or more searches. It doesn't matter. You can't get more than a minimal number of visitors to your site unless you do other ways to get traffic. It's due to a phenomenon known as google dance.

That depends. For me, sometimes not necessarily that putting too much focus on highly search keywords may actually pay off. One could still get a lot of traffic, if the person targets less searched keywords but then managed to achieve high ranking.

I agree, sometimes you can add another word to a keyword to get more specific but less searched keyword, in the time you are getting traffic from it your link building for it can help you rank with the original keyword

It would be very difficult to predict definitely the portion of traffic you would get from the total number of searches as it depends on so many factors. Apart from the selection of keywords should also be based on the conversion ratio of that particular keyword, if you are targeting sales.

40.000 is on the low side. I usually target at least 5000 per day, but do have some 2000 per day niches. Saying that - if you can dominate that keyword and the niche lends itself to higher priced products (over $300) then you'll do very well.

Ok my product is 40$, but I think I can gp up to 80$ at max.
I know somes sites in this industry that get about 50.000 uniqe visitors per day and more, not only via search engines of course.

If I can get 2000 visitors per day to my site I will make a living of this product.

When you say that you target 5000 per day do you mean keywords that have 5000 searches per day or 5000 visitors per day?

Searches/day, as I wouldn't know where you could get the stats of visitors per day outside of compete.com without having your own site or someone you know can reliably tell you his stats.

Take 2% of total searches for yourself at first (as a conservative measure). If you have 40.000 searches/month as you point out then this will be only 800 visitors per month @ starting conversion of let's say 1% (conservatively) = 8 buyers x $40 = $320.

Make sure you have an optin box, so you can re-try contacting prospects with helpful content and sales offers until they buy or unsubscribe.

Also make sure you combine the total search volume for all the synonyms and related keywords to the one you mentioned (somewhere down to 500 searches per day keyword) - this to me indicates the reach. Make one page of content per each over 500 searches/day keyword.

Also try to get an average search volume across all top 3 search engines. I normally use seobook's keyword tool as it spits out Live, Yahoo and WordTracker in addition to Google. Good luck.

Actually it's 60-65% 1st position, and the 2nd spot is around 20% and so forth. Less than 2% bother to go on 2nd page, UNLESS the first ten are all youtube videos and other junk. 40k is not bad at all, however, I don't recommend 7th place. I would definitely say get in top 3 or it's not worth it with that amount of traffic.

The competition it's not about the number, it's about how well the first page results are optimized, how popular are they, how old are they and how hard is it to beat them...
