    Have you reset it?
Hold the middle button, and press 'UP' on the click wheel.

    Have you reformatted it?
    Maybe try reflashing/updating the firmware?

When you disconnected the iPod from the PC, did you eject it first? (either via iTunes or right clicking the device and selecting "Eject"). I know that just ripping out the iPod without properly ejecting it can cause serious problems, hence the "Do not disconnect" message on screen.

I do this pretty much everytime I unplug my ipod :)
It freezes my Nano sometimes (which is easily fixed), and doesn't seem to do anything to my tough old 4G.

I clicked the middle button and up on the click wheel simultaneously and now it got restarted and everything is OK..

I did try this step earlier, but may have been too nervous to do it properly.

    A 100 THANKS TO KEROSENE

    Hallelujah! :p

Gotta love it when electronics crap themselves - and are then brought back from the dead.
Middle button + UP is the iPod equiv of CTRL ALT DELETE :)
