My guide to posting on Reddit

Someone from a Facebook group I belong to contacted me for some help posting on Reddit.

I sent him back a few ways to drive great traffic from this often overlooked social network.

I figured I would share it here - Hope it helps someone.
    ----
Ok, I am sure there is an exact science to Reddit - as far as that formula goes, I have no idea. However, I will share with you what has worked for me.

I purchase Reddit accounts from Fiverr - you can get accounts with over 2,000 Link Karma for $5.00 - definitely worth it.

Reddit revolves around Link Karma - The more you have, the more likely your posting will get past the SPAM bots.

Now - there are 3 things you can do. I have done them all and they each have their own pros and cons.

    1) Use your new account to post in the most popular subreddits in your niche. This is great because you will get a HUGE amount of traffic. However, by going in and simply posting self-promotional links, your username and IP address will get flagged by Reddit after only a few posts.

Great for a sudden blast of traffic, but the traffic won't last for more than a couple hours, (maybe 2 - 3k visits).

Still, for $5.00 a pop - it definitely can be worth it, depending on your conversion %. I had a website that was converting consistently at 6% with a $14.00 profit per sale. So, I didn't mind buying "disposable" reddit accounts.
Buy an account, make a few posts - discard it.

    2) Use your new account to post in smaller, less controlled subreddits. Using http://redditlist.com/ you can search for relevant subreddits with between 15k and 30k subscribers. This is what I have found to be the sweet spot. You won't get the sudden rush of traffic, but the traffic will last for weeks or months in a steady stream. Also, these are indexed as backlinks by Google in webmaster tools.

    3) Use your new account to engage in certain subreddits. This is probably the best method, but also the most time consuming. Basically you pick your top 5 most relevant subreddits, maybe 2 big and 3 small. You post content from major websites and leave comments on others. You upvote other content and become an engaging user. Every couple weeks, you will slip one of your own URLs in with your posting. You will ONLY want to do this once you have built up some nice link and comments karma.

If you are posting images, one important thing to remember is always run an image through karmadecay.com to make sure it's not already on Reddit - Reposting and Cross Posting (same content, different subreddit) will hurt your chances of getting your own website past the spam bots.

I hope this helps, let me know how it works out and I can help with any roadblocks you may come across.

One important thing, I advise to use a proxy IP and Incognito mode before posting anything on Reddit - just to be safe. I recommend HideMyAss.com.

Hi Matt Sayle. Are there any niches you think that work well with Reddit in turns of monetizing your time and posts in the Forum?

    Hey Dave,

The best thing about Reddit, is there is a subreddit for just about anything. The funny subreddits always drive more traffic - but they aren't as targeted. Maybe a website that sold funny t-shirts might convert well with this traffic, I haven't tried yet.

The best thing about Reddit - is you're traffic is REAL, unlike any purchased or exchange traffic. Also, it comes immediately. You can test various ways to monetize your website and find out what works best.

What I have found with Reddit is that the users HATE popups and too many advertisements. What I did to monetize the traffic is find a Clickbank product that matches the niche I am working on. What is very important is making sure it's not blocked by ad blocking software or your conversion rate will be in the toilet.

    Here is what I do:

    1) Find a product on Clickbank

    2) Go to the corresponding website and look for an affiliate tools page, sometimes you need to go to example.com/affiliate or /affiliates.
If they don't have a tools page, I choose a different product. There is a filter for this on Clickbank, but even if they report having an affiliate tools page, I still can't find one.

    3) Once you're inside the tools page, there should be a set of ad banners - right click and save the sizes you need.

    4) Open the images in Microsoft Paint or whatever image editing software you like - resize the image to something obscure, but still closely related to the size you have - like 720 x 90 will become 718 x 88. Ad Blocker Software knows the most commonly used ad sizes, and blocks images the match.

    5) After re sizing the image, save it - but change the title to something simple without any numbers - like fat-burning720x90.png will become fat.png. This will make ad blocker softare assume it's just an innocent image.

    6) Using either CPANEL, FTP or WORDPRESS MEDIA - upload this new image to your server.
On Clickbank, there should be a "promote this" button that will give you your hop link - take this link and run it through a link shortener - I prefer Masklet.com; but you can use goog.gl if you like.

    7) Once you have the link, you should then add it to the image - like you would any other linked image. Wordpress makes this very easy, but if your website is php based, just use this code:

    <a href"http://your-shortened-link.com"><img src="http://yourwebsite.com/yourimage.png></a>
    Code (markup):
    8) Once your image is live - make sure to test it. You should be able to see with with any ad blocker software enabled and it should navigate you to the clickbank product you're promoting WITH your hop link attached.

If anyone has any questions - PM me!

Another thing I wanted to mention - never add a link on reddit to your index site (example.com) Reddit is all about posting stories, news and happenings - so always create a post and then add example.com/your-post link to reddit instead
