    What do you mean by lost?
    Stolen? Expired/Dropped?

    You can check archive.org for past records.
    You could also check search engine results for the domain name.
    You can check WHOIS for registration info.
    domaintools.com has results more detailed than most, though I do recommend
    checking at least 2-3 different look-ups.

    Check the whois info simply by typing in "Whois.sc/_______.com <-- putting your friends .com in there.
