My first website

    Hey,

I'm just about to create my first website but need a little help getting it under way. Before buying a server I thought it might be a good idea to start of with a free server, so I'm using 3000mb.com. I'm also using Microsoft FrontPage as my program to create my website. However I have run into a few problems, it seems as though I have to use 'MySQL' to create my website but it seems very difficult to use for a beginner. All I want to be able to do is upload my website which I created in Microsoft FrontPage onto my free server. I have searched Google and you tube for help with 'MySQL' however there is nothing of value that I could learn of. Is it even possible to upload my website which I created in Microsoft FrontPage onto a free server like 3000mb? If not what should I be doing?

If someone could refer me to a how to guide or just give me a simple explanation it would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Hmmm I tried looking around on 3000mb.com to find the information but did not find it off hand. But first thing you would need to do is ask them if you can use frontpage to design you site. They need to have frontpage extensions or something installed, sorry I can not remember exactly what it is. But if you ask if you can use frontpage then you will get the answer you need.

As far as using MySQL to upload your site. You have me completely stumped. You would not need to use MySQL to upload a site. What you need to find is information on using FTP (file transfer protocol) to upload your site to the server. Once you find out the information about the ftp you might be able to upload via frontpage. However if they tell you that you need a ftp program then I would suggest a program called cute ftp. Cute ftp can be downloaded at www.cuteftp.com

The hardest part of all of this is the design and it sounds like you already have that taken care of. So now you just need to figure out how to upload the site. If you have any more questions then feel free to ask.

I see so MySQL has nothing to do with uploading my website from FrontPage, what exactly is it there for then? Should I be concentrating on it as a beginner or is it nor necessary?

I have tried contacting them many times with questions however I haven't received any replies. Any recommendations for a free website host that will allow me to use FrontPage? There is a lot of crap and it's hard to spot the difference between the dodgy ones and the decent ones.

MySQL is for databases. You would need to use MySQL if you were to make a forum such as the one you are looking at now, or perhaps for an online storefront. I would say that as a beginner you should concentrate your learning skills on HTML, php and perhaps Java. I can guarantee that there people that would disagree with me, but this is just my thought.

As far as the question of weather or not 3000mb.com is a good site. Well I just went back there again to see if I could find out the information about the frontpage extensions. Well I did not seem to find the information I was looking for. I did not see a "contact us" link. I did however notice that there is a lot of Google ads and other ads on the site. Most of these ads were advertising other free hosts. This seems pretty weird. Why would you have so many ads from competitors? Also one of the links to their forum is not working and I saw a few other things. Basically what that boils down to is a poorly maintained site and something just seems a little fishy. I would suggest going somewhere else. It has been a long time since I have used free hosts, so I do not have much information on that. However their was a site I used for about a year that I was pretty happy with. You could check out www.doteasy.com. I think they offer some pretty cheep hosting plans. However they do require that you have a domain name such as www.yourwebsite.com. Or you can register one with them for pretty cheap too. I know that at least one of their plans offer frontpage extensions.

You could also try posting a post on these forums to ask about free or cheep hosting, I am sure there are lots of people that would have some good information.

In closing. Do not be put off by the idea of having to pay for hosting, it could be a lot cheaper then you think.

I'm planning on paying for a site but not just yet, I just though that I would learn the ins and outs of making a website. Also the ATM machine ate my card and i wont have it for another 3 days. Today and tomorrow being two days I have off I though I could spend it usefully learning some skills.

What would be a good sub forum to put the question of free web hosts in?

    Thanks for your help.
