My first website

I was thinking of making a website featuring either one kids tv show, or just about kids tv shows all up (for someone my age I watch alot of nickelodeon, disney channel and cartoon network, and am hoping of becoming an animator).

I just wanted to know, for someone who knows very little about web business, would this be hard? I can design sites fairly well, and if I were designing one for myself, could probably make quite a good one. I know how to use Dreamweaver, and MS Front Page (Is that the one? That they used to use for web site making?) I can us Macromedia Flash, and make banners and things like that. I cant do very much, coding wise.

I'm getting the idea of how hosting and domains work. I have very little knowledge on SEO, but will be willing to put in quite a few hours reading up on it.

I was also wondering if something like this could be lucrative, through ads and what not?

I would probably do some contest to help get it started, giving away money to people with the highest post count on the forums after 2 or so months.

    Thanks for any input,

    Grim.

    Hi Grim,

You wouldn't be using MS Front Page for websites. The code MSFP puts together is pathetic - positions of graphics, font sizes and whatnot will likely fall apart once you put the website online. Dreamweaver might seem intimidating at first, but stick with it and you'll soon get the hang of it.

For SEO, there's nothing better than spending an hour or two a day reading through various SEO forums (DP's SEO section is quite good). I've spent a good year on SEO research and I still continue to learn new things every day.

Thanks Ponynugget, I have used Dreamweaver, and built a .html site for it at school as a exam for IT which I think I got an A for, though because the site was for school, I didn't go as far as getting it on the internet, so don't yet know where to go after getting it to a .html file, though i'm sure I will learn soon enough :)

Nothing is hard when you have the skills.
I'm sure you will improve, just work hard ;)

    Good luck!

good luck.. it all depend on your niche.. just don't focus too much on the design part. I would advise an alternate page where u have cool or flashy design and simple/fast loading page where you can play around with those SEO thingy..

    Cheers!

Another thing I can do, that I forgot to add, is make simple games with Gamemaker (a game making software), like platform games, those ones where you control a car through traffic, etc. I could probably make fan games, which might help getting more people.

It is also a good idea to tryout some existing CMS (Content Management System) before starting to build your website from scratch. There are tons of options out there and most of them are free / open source such as wordpress, cmsms, joomla & etc. Maybe you might find one that is suitable for you thus saves you a lot of development time so you can concentrate more on developing your contents.

This forum category is a good place to start
