This is the first thing I did with Photoshop. It's nothing special, but still... it's the first.

    Good start off.

    Here are a few pointers:

When designing a website always use the following diameters - 18 inch width x 22 inch height
    Resolution : 72 dpi
    Color Mode: RGB Color 8-bit

Here is a screenshot of the new project window to give you a better look at it.

Just change the options to these.

Secondly use gradients instead of solid colors. Also try playing around with your Blending options and the layer options. (Right click on the layer in the layer sidebar [default F7 button])

Finally use web friendly texts such as Arial(most recommended) or Times New Roman (least recommended - but this depends too).

Also look up some tutorial sites such as the tuts+ sites or speckyboy or smashingmagazine. These are great places to learn new techniques and also have a very good inspirational gallery.

    Good Luck,
    Sid

i Suggest the use of some other fonts, maybe its due to the image you posted - but the font is making the eye strain.

You are in the right path, by dividing the site into sections and designing accordingly will help while slicing and converting it to HTML and CSS

I will give you a thumps up, for this design... but the best way to improve your designs is by continuing to make more designs... as they say nothing can beat experience...

    Here are my suggestions:
    - Go to your favorite site. Look at what colors they use and then use them in your design. Check out their font as well.
    - Google "free icon" or something like that. There are some pretty cool icons available for free.
