Honestly , I think you shouldn't make black background. It's something like I can't tell you what's wrong , Umm mm it's not bring attention to your visitor enough. First i feel that "What this site ?" moreover , the text in daily update should be all bold.
Except the black background everything looking for me okey. It has it's own style. Choose a color for background from blue family. I can say your site design is different.
