I did look through the threads here for general promotion ideas, and yet I never found any sports-specific things. My new forum is at http://www.aussiesportsforum.com and so if anyone has any ideas as to how I can get this little guy up and off the ground, I'd be grateful!

Try writing your own articles about different sports and submitting them out.
Should get you a good start-up number of visitors.
If you find the results are good, then keep on producing original articles and get them out there.

Thanks, do you think I should submit them to article submission places though? They tend to not be read by many people and be more for backlinks, I thought.

Submitting doesnt hurt for the fact it will come up somewhere. Digg.com, Shoutwire and blogspot.com are all great for this. I have found I recieved better responses with shoutwire and blogspot.com than digg.com. Digg.com is about even scales for me right now.

But submitting these articles wont hurt. It's a form of site promotion. It helps get what you want to say to the public about your forum.

    Hi Hannah,

I took a look at your forum, and it's got a nice look to it. :) Article submission can definitely help you, not only in creating backlinks, but also by aiding the SEs in finding, understanding, and indexing your site.

You may also want to do some specific searches in the SEs to find targeted directories for submission, e.g. "sports directories", etc.

Finally, try to identify some similarly themed sites and contact them requesting a backlink or link exchange. I'd suggest targeting sites that are *not* forums, as this would probably provide the most benefit to both your site and theirs.

    Best of luck. :)
