You tend to rank higher in search rankings if you have a Top Level domain.

I too would take the $50 and invest in your own domain and hosting. If you want to stay with the blogger platform, that's fine (although I personally prefer Wordpress), but having your own domain will go a long way with your credibility.
As it is now, you are just using the space on blogger, you don't actually own it, and therefore you are limited to what kind of changes and upgrades you can make as your blog grows.

You don't necessarily have to purchase a domain through blogger, you can use any registrar you want.

A .com domain and hosting will probably run you $25 and then I'd spend the rest on a premium design.
I think those two things are first and foremost before you start worrying about spending money on marketing..besides, $50 will not go a long way when it comes ti marketing and advertising and you are too new to waste it there anyway.

Build readers naturally and fine tune the blog first before you start sinking money into advertising.
