IF you can't make money after reading this thread, you'll never make a dime online.

What more is there to give away? Not much.

Here's a hint. Imagine you had a huge website that got 20,000 uniques per day. Imagine those uniques converted at 1%, that's 200 sales per day. Now imagine each sale paid $13.50, (you'd get higher if you're doing 100+ sales per day). That's a revenue stream of $2,600 per day. If each unique was a click from adwords and cost $0.08, then you total cost is $1,600. So your net is $1,100 per day. Now, not too many people have ONE website that can produce that many uniques per day. So how do you get them? You build a network of websites. You fuel them with ppc and bob's your uncle. Another hint: The more related, without actually being the same thing, your "network" is to your offer, the higher your conversion rate will be.

    :)

    Anyone willing to chime in,

I find this pretty strange. I launched a campaign 2-3 days ago with a max budget of $100 per day. Setup 9 or so Adgroups with a Max CPC of $0.50 (on the content network). Login this morning, and there are still 0 impressions for the content network. I enabled the search network for an hour at $0.30 max cpc and received 12 clicks in that short hour (Avg. cpc of $0.30...).

What's up with the content network? Why can't I get my ads to show up? There's anywhere from 70-150 keywords (keyphrases) in each adgroup, and each adgroup's keywords are relevant.

    For example...

    friskies cat food
    "friskies cat food"
    [friskies cat food]
    friskies cat food sale
    "friskies cat food sale"
    [friskies cat food sale]
    friskies cat food coupons
    ...
    ..
    friskies cat food history
    ..
    ..

    Any ideas/suggestions? Explanations?

Really weird... bad niche? Find some Adsense blocks on those niche pages and see what kind of ads are running...

So an hour or two after posting that, Adwords was reporting 9 clicks, 2,934 impressions. Pretty weird that it went active all of a sudden after 3 days of waiting.. maybe Adwords is watching this thread?? lol

    aj22,

Just wanted to share this with you, and everyone else. After four failed campaigns, $100+, a few sleepless nights, and lots of testing/tweaking, I finally received my first conversion.

    Stats for Today's Campaign:
    Spent: $7.74
    Earned: $13.50 :D

My very first conversion and wow it sure is rewarding. That's almost 150% ROI :) Now the real work begins - time to scale, right? :)

ww000! This totally brightened my day. Thanks a lot AJ for ALL your help and patience. I'm totally looking forward to your follow up post.

YES - good stuff. Whatever you just did, do it 1000 times.

Track your stuff with Placement Reports, see what sites send you conversions, and hold your position on those sites.

So, I promised a follow-up post that would summarize all the good stuff from the first 50+ pages of this thread, introduce some new stuff, and hopefully get some more people jump-started in the right direction. What follows is more or less a step-by-step on what I would do when launching a new campaign. New tidbits are sprinkled in.

STEP 0: PREPARATION (NEWBIES: START HERE)

    - Open an Adwords account.
    - Open a Yahoo Search Marketing account.
    - Read the help documentation on BOTH from start to finish. Adwords Learning Center is a great resource.
    - Read the latest 5-6 pages on the Digital Point forums for Adwords/YSM so you know "what's going on" in terms of Quality Score issues and things like that.
    - Open an account at a generation 2.0 (my term) affiliate network. I recommend Azoogle.
    - If you would like to sign up UNDER ME on Azoogle, PM me. I will be happy to help via PM and give a little extra guidance.
    - Newbies: find and read the following blogs from post 1 to the latest post: Uberaffiliate, Super Affiliate Mindset, Zac Johnson, Jonathan Volk. Read EVERY post.

    STEP 1: NICHE RESEARCH

So you're wondering: where's the traffic? Where are these .07 clicks you speak of? Honestly, there is no easy answer. It's all about experimenting with different niches and areas. Here is how I determine a niche to test:

    - What's hot? What are people talking about? What's the latest trends? Resources: Google trends, eBay top selling items, any sort of buzz index. Be careful here though, while sites like these are a good indicator of what's hot, you also need to keep your audience in mind. Just because politics is hot right now, or just because economy topics are hot, doesn't mean the bulk of that audience demographic (30-70) year old are exactly the ringtone buying niche. So remember: topic + right audience = traffic = conversions = happy affiliate.

    STEP 2: LANDING SITE CREATION

    - Your landing site needs the following components:

    Landing page
    About Us
    Privacy Policy
    Sitemap
    Contact
A couple of pages of content

Pretty typical, by the book stuff. Just because Content Network (CN) doesn't measure Quality Score (QS) as heavily as Search doesn't mean it's not a factor in the long run.

    - What should your landing PAGE look like to get untargeted visitors onto your ringtone page?

    a) Very briefly include information about whatever topic brought them to your page. Keep this off to an area of the page where you don't expect their eyes to wander first.

    b) Include text links or banners in areas where you think a visitor's eyes will hit first. "[TOPIC NAME] Ringtones". Get the idea? :) NOTE: Make sure your TOPIC NAME is somehow represented in the ringtone catalog by the provider you are using so that you stay in compliance with your affiliate network's TOS.

Your ultimate goal is to get your untargeted visitor to CLICK that link. Everyone has a cell phone. Ringtones are a major IMPULSE purchase. Use that to your benefit!

Note: your ringtone page can be hosted on the same domain or different, I've seen no effect with this variable.

    c) Experiment: your first attempt most likely isn't going to be the best. It could take dozens of combinations of attempts.

Your visitor should be taking this route:

Clicks Adsense Ad --> Topic LP --> Ringtone LP --> Ringtone Merchant LP

    STEP 3: LAUNCHING YOUR CAMPAIGN

    - I'm going to stick strictly with Adwords for now. YSM's CN is a bit erratic, I don't really use it.

    - Assuming you have read all the documentation for Adwords, create a new campaign based on a topic we'll call "TOPIC ONE" (retiring "Cat food"!!).

You want 75-150 keywords either PHRASE MATCH or BROAD MATCH. Let's start with BROAD to get the traffic rolling.

Your keywords need to all look like this

    TOPIC ONE
    TOPIC ONE word here
    TOPIC ONE something here
    TOPIC ONE another thing here
    TOPIC ONE yougettheidea
    TOPIC ONE another keyword

Adwords assigns a theme to that Ad Group, and if done correctly, that Ad Group will start showing on pages with a related theme.

Tip: Google for pages with Adsense blocks in the topic you have chosen. See what kinds of ads are showing and experiment from there. Also use this information to create your own ad's, see what you think YOU would click if you were a visitor on that site. Ask some friends the same thing.

    - Start your bid at my magic number of .40 - you can adjust from here. Daily budget is whatever you're comfortable with. I start with $800.

STEP 4: METRICS - TO CONTINUE ON WITH A TOPIC OR NOT

Give each topic at least 4 days running. It can take Google up to 2-3 days just to activate your content network campaign. Then go by this if you would like:

Tons of impressions, not many clicks: Re-work your ad.
Not many impressions, not many clicks: Bad niche/topic.

Getting some conversions? GOOD. Make sure your tracking pixel is planted then measure each ad group by cost/conversion. This is your ultimate metric.

Run a Placement Report under the Reports tab to determine WHICH websites are sending you conversions, then hold your ground on those sites.

Slowly lower your ad group bids - SLOWLY. If impressions crash, immediately get your old bid back there.

There you have it. This is probably as far as I can go without jeapordizing my own stuff, but I'm pretty confident that those of you that have stuck through all 50+ pages should be able to get something working eventually.

Any questions... fire away (or better idea: stop reading now, and just launch something!).

    Good luck.

Sorry if this was previously covered, but any suggestions on where to read up about conversion tracking implementation? I've got Analytics setup, just not sure how to properly use subid's and such.. The ?subid={keyword} doesn't work for the content network, does it?

Thanks again, AJ. Spending is up to $11.94, still with 1 conversion @ $13.50. I'm still in the green! :)

I would also suggest as pre-step to step 0, that to have enough cash flow to burn for testing. This particular method will have you burn through a lot of cash during testing before you can get some decent stats. Well atleast for me it did...
