My expections with Google Adwords Dynamic keywords insertion???

I have just tested my Google Adwords Dynamic keywords insertion.

Lets say my keyword was red widgets

I search for red widgets on Google. I see my Ad and I click on it and then land on my landing page.

My code echoes my keyword and I see red widgets on my page.

    All is cool so far.

Then when I search on buy red widgets again I see my ad becuase buy red widgets triggered my phrase match keword red widgets

So I click on my ad and land on my landing page and see that my code echoes my keyword on the page again but I only see red widgets on my page the keyword that was triggered and not the modifier that I expected to see.

I expected to see buy red widgets but I am only seeing red widgets

Is there something wrong here? Is my expectation correct. Does Google Adwords Dynamic keywords insertion send all the keyword data or just the keyword that was triggered?

    Thanks

    Mike

If your dynamic keyword is "red widgets' and this triggered a 'buy red widgets' ad then the only keyword passed is the original dynamic keyword - "red widgets".

The keyword being inserted is your own keyword that triggered your ad, NOT the keyword the user typed.

    Yes that's correct.

I have www.mydomain.com/red-widgets.php?kw={keyword} as my landing page url in my campaigns keyword destination url

    <?php echo $kw ?> in my page

I was thinking that if my ad that was triggered by the searched term buy red widgets which is a phrase match because red widgets is the phrase match keyword that is set to trigger the ad.

Then I though the whole search term buy the modifier and the keyword phrase red widgets would have made it to the echo tag on the page.

Is this not how dynamic keyword insertion works?

    Thanks

As explained above, NO. If you use the keyword "red widget" and that keyword triggered your ad, if they typed "buy red widget" or "looking for plastic red widget", the DKI sends the keyword "red widget", the one you used to trigger the ad.

If you want it to show for "buy red widget", then bid on "buy red widget". When they search on that keyword and it triggers your ad, then you'll be showing that term on your page.

The DKI by the way is meant to use it in your ad. You can use it as a parameter in your destination URL as you want to do, no problem. Just make sure your keywords will make sense where you want to insert them into your page.

    ah now I understand...

You see, I thought all along that it sent the whole lot in the url string.

So I echoed the string (after cleaning it) in a hidden form field so that when my enquiry form is submitted I receive the searched keyword in my email.

    So that explains it then.

I can still get the data by logging into my adwords account and seeing what keywords triggered my clicks.

Just would have been real nice to get that with the email enquiries so I could see who searched on exactly what string.

Thanks for your help, I can put that one to bed then.

    Cheers

    Mike

Had it been exact match only, your thoughts would be 100% right...

    > when my enquiry form is submitted I receive the searched keyword in my email.

I'm a little confused. I thought you were inserting the keyword into your landing page. Now, if I understand correctly, you trigger an email sent to you with the keyword. Why?? You can see in your account which keywords get impressions and clicks. I think you realize that now it seems.

    > I could see who searched on exactly what string.

The Search Query Report, although limited, will tell you this. Even better, your own site log files. Of course, both show the exact search term used when they click on your ads. You don't know the search term of those who didn't click on your ads.

"I thought you were inserting the keyword into your landing page" Yes I am but I am inserting them into a hidden form field in a email submission form within the page.

Doing it this way I get to see the search terms along with the email enquiry. I see the client name and what he searched on instantly with the email enquiry. I dont have to go digging anywhere else. But now I realise it is limited to just the actual keyword that was triggered and no modifiers.

I can live with that but need to know.

    Thanks
